how to test an open box DA* 16-50mm?

I'm getting an open box DA* 16-50mm from Amazon Warehouse Deals, which is their own returns. It's reported as an open box, with a nix on the main unit and a dent in the box; for that, the price is reduced from $950 to $650, and an extra 1 year extended warranty supplied.

I suspect it may be from one of you guys! Now how do I verify it doesn't have the dreaded problems listed in the old threads still lurking around?

Typically, the SDM problems set in after months or years of use, so there's not really any test you can do. Just cross your fingers.

All I can say is check the lens over completely. I tried two different open box buys from Amazon and had to send both back. They were packaged so poorly that I'm not sure if they were defective to start with or if it was due to the shipping. One was 16-50mm and the other a 50-135mm. I wish you good luck just be sure you are totally happy before the 30 days is up.

That's exactly what I'm asking. Where can I get some test targets? How should I check for the full aperture range, focus range, to work? What to try, what to pay attention to?

Best/Only way to determine if its a good copy is to use it extensively when you get it.... do this and then study the images for any soft areas in the image. Also check focus accuracy... you can use a focus chart for this but take care to read the instructions clearly before doing this.... any strange noises with the SDM would be a turnoff, should be near silent.... To find a focus chart... use google.

you mention the full price being $950... you can pick up new from Adorama/B&H for $745 (I got the 16-50 in January from Adorama)

Hi Braver,
There're 2 issues with 16-50 (AFAIK): SDM and de-centering.
The first one can pop up in a week, a month a year or never.
The second one is there from the start. There're many ways to check for it. I used the following. Put a newspaper on the floor and make sure the plane of the sensor is as close to parallel to the paper as possible. Take a few shots at different FL wide open. Compare opposite sides/corners of the pictures if they are equaly OOF.
Good luck,

Thanks @sinus007 -- it's a good tip with the paper and OOF corners!
