The Pentax 18-55 K-x Kit Lens

I am finally getting my White K-x and White 18-55 kit lens. Those of you who have this lens, what do you think about the image quality? Just curious, as I have never tried it out. Well, not yet at least.

Thanks
Ben

I can't comment too much from personal experience as I have only taken a handful of shots with the kit lens, but from what I've read around the forum Pentax's kit lenses are among the best kits that the major manufacturers produce. Canon and Nikon both have similar in specs kit lenses, but the perception is that Pentax's image quality is a touch better.

You'll be more than happy with the results from the kit. Naturally, upgrading to a different walk-around or looking into primes will give you some better IQ. You can't go wrong with any one of the DA Limiteds for the APS-C sensor in the K-x.

The first lens I purchased was the DA 21mm and it is the primary lens on my camera.

Don't overlook the M and A series lenses as well. They're manual focus, but for the price points many of them are top-notch values.

Assuming it is the exactly same optics as the also new 18-55WR, then is a very very fine piece of glass, with regards to color and sharpness.

I was actually very surprised to see the results after a week lon trip in the desert...

Also important to point out that i had great available lighting and most shots were not wide open, but around f/8... i think that help a lot...

I like the dal 18-55mm. The best value lens.
lightweight, small size, pretty sharp that it can par with primes at f8 IMO.
it can do a little bit of macro too.
I miss that lens

At f8 you just can't complain about color, contrast or sharpness I've found it soft at 18, but that's not surprising. I've gotten quick about zooming out and then a touch back in to about 20mm :P

F8, ISO 400 - Nice bright sunny day shot at 55mm.

100% crop

(arrgh - hit post accidentally)

I won't be using the 18-55 much because I get really bugged about sharpness and I have my FA 50 1.4 and love it :P But I *have* been impressed with the DA L 50-200mm. It's not a prime, but it doesn't fall under the category 'kit lens' IMO either

It is a pretty good lens, but I use it only when I NEED A-F or a wide lens. I prefer a prime lens for realizing sharper images, and I've been familiarizing myself with manual focusing.

Yes the 18-55 is good for a kit lens, but thats like saying someone is quite handsome for a middle aged, balding, fat guy . The 18-55mm is the worst lens Pentax currently make. You can still take great pictures with it, but donít be under any illusion the lens is a match for any other Pentax lenses.
