I have had this lens for a while and sold it recently; for a shot wide open I find the sharpness very decent; as all fast tele lenses I improves a lot stopped down at f4.
As for close up shots, like birds, DOF is so small that you have to stop down anyway.

Thanks for the comments.

The clear filter idea is based on the 300+ thread where we have seen that some lenses seem to become a little better with the right rear filter.

Right now I am deciding whether to keep or sell the lense, thats all.
I believe that any lens that uses drop in filters in the rear is designed to work best with a filter installed.

The Tamron 300mm f/2.8 60B is. That is for certian. I even read the included 115mm front filter increases sharpness as well on that particular lens.

. . .
I tried this once and I got 3 cats up both legs . . . they climbed me like a tree! I had a stringer of fish in one hand and a camera in the other.

3 cats! You are cat lovers, I suppose. That's a good subject to test lenses.

Hi Marcus
glad to see you here; the web site that allow to track the parcel tells that the lens is at the Singapore customs; I hope they will not keep it too long.
Here is a good example that one can expect from this lens - here stopped down at f4.5; despite the very hard light conditions color rendering and contrast is excellent. Wide open it is prone to blue fringing anyway (blue halo around harsh light transitions for subjects slightly out of focus)

No. For instance, as has been mentioned the Tamron 60B was designed with the filter in place, whereas its predecessor as designed without a filter place, despite having the slot. Also, we have a very extensive thread in the 300mm lens club, with many example photos. And interestingly enough comparissons with and without filter show different results. Some lenses work much(!) better with the filter in place and other visibly better without the filter.

those are the 100% crops anyhow, 550x600 from 3872x2592. I'm seeing that while they have higher contrast as the f goes higher, howver I feel that there is a similar detail being resolved, any opinion. Feel free to argue this ^^

Also, I have absolutely no idea why I am now seeing that not having the filter is improving the sharpness? even at f8?
