Why oh why no SDM TC?

Just emailed Sigma, they said no plans for HSM compatible TC for Pentax. Pentax aren't doing anything about one either.

Why? It just seems weird to me. I'm frustrated. I want the latest Sigma 70-200/2.8 (or a Pentax one, yeah right), but often use a 1.4x with my current non-HSM 70-200, so am holding off. Why won't they do it? Surely it would sell, there's lots of HSM Sigma's for Pentax out there already isn't there?

Please Sigma or Pentax do something about this.

This and this alone is what always makes my mind wander to Canon or Nikon - availability of lenses even of 3rd party makes.

So, you currently use the old Sigma 70-200 with a TC 1.4x ? Can you tell me exactly witch model are those. I don't care buying the old 70-200, but i want that 1.4x

thanks,

Although Sigma is SLOW they are a very customer oriented company.
I would imagine that if they got enough (friendly) letters that they'd at least consider it. I can't picture it being all that many changes to the current models

The current Sigma 1.4x TC will not run the HSM Sigma lenses. Some Tamron and Kenko TCs MIGHT. I have the original Sigma EX 70-200 f2.8 (non-macro, non-DG, non-HSM), and the Sigma EX 1.4x TC (non-DG).

Yeah well that's what I figure - but it's been a while now. Plus bloody Pentax are sitting on their hands.

I have the Kenko 1.5x and Tamron 1.4x Pz TCs which allegedly provide HSM autofocus, but neither of them autofocuses on my K20D with the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX DG HSM II. Might be better on the K7, but I haven't had a chance to try it.

What happens is that the autofocus hunts a bit and then gives up, usually off the focus point.

I know the K7 has better autofocus than the K20, but whether it is enough to fix this problem, I don't know.

Is your Kenko the SHQ one? The one I tried wasn't SHQ and it caused K20D+SDM lens to act very strange (Fn menu would disappear after a second and AF assist didn't work in MF mode).

HSM and SDM are in their infancy, they may not see any point in producing a TC that may soon be redundant. SDM especially (because of the failures) would not be seen as a safe bet.

Perhaps there is no genuine need for a Pentax TC yet. IMHO, there are 2 groups of TC users - those who stick a cheap lens on it, and those who stick an expensive super-tele on it. We know Pentax don't have any expensive high quality fast super-tele at this moment. As to those looking for a cheap way to extend their consumer lenses, they won't pay top dollar for a decent TC (no point anyway). The DA*200/2.8 & 300/4 are within kind of grey area though.
