Vivitar S1 70-210 Version 4.

I just purchased this lens and am awaiting its arrival. I have read a fair bit about these lenses but most of the info seems to be about V3 and V2.
Anybody have any experience with Version 4?

V4 is supposed to be ok, and quite light. V1-2-3 are the real reasons why people still talk about those series 1 nowadays. V2 is actually the least desirable, V1 is better because it's faster at f3.5 constant, and has better macro. V3 is the best all around.

I have used a Vivitar non series 1 70-210 KA mount, and it's much better than I would have expected. Nothing life-changing about it, but better than "ok". Expect something in those lines for your V4.

S1, V1, rah rah rah!!

I have a V1. It's a beast (880 grams, almost two pounds) but it's pretty fast at f/3.5 throughout, and it's crystal-sharp, and it cost me a whole US$30 on eBay. It's at home on either my K20D or an old advanced Argus/Chinon M42 screwbody. Let's see, the V4 is f/4, right? Or has my memory failed again?

EDIT: Yup, memory corrupted; reboot. Versions 1 and 2 are f/3.5; Versions 3, 4 and 5 are f/2.8-4. All the skinny on them is here: [ Vivitar 70-210 Series 1 Macro Zoom Lenses - Mark Roberts Photography ].

Version 4 is a Cosina-built Vivitar. I had a Vivitar Series 1 28-105mm made by Cosina, just sold. The most noticeable feature was a pronounced yellow cast from the coatings. On film this might have been enough to be annoying. On digital, it could be fixed.

I finally could not resist a Version 1 at a bottom feeder price. It needs some work before I can use it.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I figured that for $70 in excellent condition it was worth the price.

Does anyone out there have any sample pics from a v4?
