What does the 44 stands for if anything, on the Helios 44-2?

Hi,

The Helios 44-2 is actually 58mm focal lenght, f 2.0 max aperture. Filter ring is 49mm. What does the 44 stands for? if anything?

Thanks,

Most other soviet lenses from that era follow similarly arbitrary naming patterns. Take the Helios 40 for instance, it's an 85mm f/1.5. . .

It seems to be just a model number. During my LBA days I compiled a long list of Soviet lenses that were / weren't recommended, and was astounded at the lack of pattern in the names and numbering, even among those probably made at the same factory. A cynic might think this was a clumsy attempt to confuse foreign spies.
