Question about "close up lens"

I have a set of questions about close up lens that come with Voigtladander SL II 40/2 Ultron...

1. Can it be use with other lens?

2. Why don't lens manufacturers built the lens with the close up glass piece into it in the first place? Why make it removable?

just curious.

1) Presumably with any other lens that has such a small filter size (which is to say, almost no other lens :-). but there are of course lots of other close up lenses on the market in other sizes. Most are junk; you want one that is a mutli-element "achromatic" design (and multi-element does *not* mean, those sets of three *separate* lenses you often see).

2) Because with the closeup lens mounted, it can't focus to infinity. Close up lenses are like reading glasses.

One lens that comes with a similar accessory is the Cosina/Vivitar/Phoenix/Pentax 100mm f3.5 macro. They call it a "matched macro adapter". It allows the lens to do 1:1 magnification.

The reason they don't 'build it in' is that it limits focusing distance.... no infinity focus. Only close ups.

So you use the close up filters when you are close up focusing only.

Raynox close-up lenses, of the achromatic type Marc mentions, are highly regarded. I and a number of members of this forum use the Raynox DCR-250. Other models with different magnification / close-up characteristics are available, depending on your needs. A 'universal' front thread adapter is included with each Raynox lens, but it will not mount on threads as small as your Ultron. You will also need an inexpensive step-up adapter, 40mm to at least 49mm.
