How about a $900.00 teleconverter?

Some people are on this planet are an insult to human intelligence: Pentax-F AF Adapter 1.7X...1056493...NEW/RARE/BOX on eBay.ca (item 270280309773 end time 20-Mar-10 17:17:11 EDT)

And here I was balking at $350.00

Kevin markets unusual (and sometimes not so unusual) camera equipment to collectors at collector prices. If you absolutely, positively HAVE to have it right now . . . .

Teleconverters

I too balk at $350. But here is my question: Is this TC (Pentax AF F 1.7) worth it? Is it better that a Kenko? How much better is the Kenko from the Vivitar or others, like the Sigma? I picked up a Quantaray 2x TC for $40 at a Ritz clearance, and I think that blowing up my raw image is as good or better. And how would this Pentax be with the DA 55-300? Can you direct me to any comparisons? thanks.

Worth $350? I say absolutely! I use it with a DA*300mm f4, A*400mm f/2.8 and SMC 1000mm f/8. The AF can be quirky but also useful but the optical quality is very good.

The Pentax AFA 1.7X is a totally different animal. It is not a simple teleconverter. Rather, it turns the lens, almost any lens, provided it is fast enough (F/4 or faster) into an autofocus lens. You can buy a relatively inexpensive Super Takumar 300mm F/4 and with the Pentax AFA 1.7X, turn it into an autofocus 500mm F/6.7. You will have to approximately focus first, but that is not a big deal.

More importantly, there is currently no TC that works reliably (autofocus-wise) with Pentax SDM lenses. I'm using the Pentax AFA 1.7X with the Pentax DA 60-250mm if I can't bring my Sigma 135-500mm along.

Is it worth $350? Only you can answer that question.
