DA*300mm f4 & F 1.7x AF TC

I've been saying that the DA*300mm f4 & F 1.7x AF TC is a pretty good combination but felt the need for a reality check today so I took it out & and took some shots with a monopod. I think the results confirm what I've been saying. There is some loss of resolution but it's as good or better than my old 500mm Tak could do--and it's a heck of a lot easier to handle.

Here's an uncropped but processed version of one of the shots:

and here's an unprocessed 100% crop:

I do have to say that bokeh in this sample seems a bit rough. That may be a weakness of the combination but it may also be that the background is cut grass, which is pretty rough in any case.

You are preaching to the choir. I was shooting BIFs with that combo the last two days and could not be happier with it. No monopod needed. Much more fun to shoot in the sky with that 510mm combo than a Bigma which I was using a few months ago. The built-in limiter of the TC provides an unintentional but great performance enhancer that keeps me from missing shots when the focus cycles for a second or two.

Your BIF (Bee In Flight) is pretty nifty for 510mm. I will have to leave flying insects for your eyes though.

Result looks great! I've always considered picking up the 300mm DA* for the telephoto range.

How's the weight/handling of the lens (including the teleconverter)?

Thanks, EsmanI ! think it handles beautifully--certainly compared to my big lenses! Especially with the TC, you'll want to use at least a monopod for consistently good results, though.
