40mm Pancake

Last time I bought a Pentax 40mm f/2.8 (had to sell off some gear a while back) it seemed they were much lower priced than they are now, if I'm way behind please feel free to hang me in effigy here, but they seem pretty pricey now.

Production perhaps?

Carl

Browse this forum and you'll find at least 20 threads discusisng the price hikes over the last year or so. But actually, the DA40 hasn't changed *that* much. The regular street price for it used to be between $250 and $300 (with occasional rebates or special sales bringing the price down a bit if you happened to buy at the right time). Now it's between $300 and $350.

The used price have increased by about 75-100 USD though. I remember missing one by 20 minutes for 180 USD just last year, and I got mine for 300 USD last week.

Ok Marc thank you thank you for answering my questions, and sorry tried a couple of searches and no luck, probably not searching with the right terms or something on my end.

Also noticed that the prices vary wildly in the US market, one search on amazon had one starting at $699.00 and another was $949.00. Further searching I found one as low as $399.00 but thats about it.

I rememeber them being $249.00-329.00 or so.

Thanks, Carl

B&H and Adorama should always be the first places to look in the US, to the point where it's barely even worth the effort to look elsewhere - except maybe to see if prodigital2000 happens to be offering an especially good deal on Ebay as they do from from time to time. But right now, B&H and Adorama (at $340) - are both slightly under prodigital2000 (at $370).

As for finding threads on lens prices, try the search phrase "lens prices". Or just look at the thread title listing - there are several just from the las week or two.

I think US prices have been stable, up about about twenty percent over the last couple of years. The big difference is that it used to be that there were some amazing prices on lenses coming from Canada. Considering that the exchange rate at that time was strongly in favor of the US dollar, the prices could be phenomenal. Sadly, as of March 2009, that has gone away. Of course, Nikon and Canon have been raising prices over the same time as well.

Although as noted in another thread, Canadian dealer prodigital2000 is currently offering a price on the DA70 that's almost as good as they or anyone has ever offered. So I wouldn't give up all hope of seeing that sort of thing again. But I know with the $50 rebate from pentax and a sale price around $250, I got my DA40 for barely $200 a few years ago. That was an amazing deal, but it was only good for about a month.
