The lesson I'd take from this: take out an insurance policy so you don't have to lose sleep over this in the future. I have one from State Farm called a "personal articles" policy. It's all risk worldwide, no deductible, full replacement cost. $40/year to cover thousands of dollars worth of gear.

I've opened a few FA lenses up and there's a pair of metal sleeves inside. One holds the lens elements and the second is the barrel that turns to focus the lens. The inner one has a pair of opposite pins that slide in groves of the outer one. I'm willing to bet that if this design is the same as the others I've looked at, you can have it repaired by Eric for under $100.00 The pins just need to be replaced or realigned.

Then you can send an apology to Ned for being the clumsy one.

It is the best smoker/bbq around for sure. Bar none. If I ever torch my FA 50 f/1.4 (ok, ok, ok, it was not f/1.2), it will be by the BGE for sure.

Of course any lens can (and probably will) break when dropped to a concrete floor. But I'm not sure an FA 50mm f/1.4 with all that plastic has the build quality that a lens priced like that today should. Perhaps it's time to consider other options.

I need a 50. Not 40, or 42, probably not 55 either. I need 50 f1.4. Zeiss Planar T* is the name of the game, I think. WHo needs autofocus anyway. Way over-rated in my opinion.

I used to shoot Cosina 55 1.2 but now almost exclusively use A 50 1.2. Controlling aperture from camera is a bliss, and T* doesnt have that.

Wow, that really sticks. My friend recently dropped his canon 50D about 4 feet onto concrete and I never want to see that kind of thing again. Although, it was kinda funny watching it bounce around like a ball for a few seconds. However, my friend didn't think it was funny, but in the end the camera still worked as well as the lens so all is well.

Sorry to hear about the loss of an excellent lens. I would keep it around just incase you do get another one and may require the parts from it. I do question however why you would have your camera on while cooking? Perhaps you wanted to take some shots of the food and was worried of it getting burned? Did you at least get some shots off afterwards or was the pain unbearable? Readers want to know
