Measurrements

I did a little experimenting tonight, so for anyone interested, here are my results.

I used the Raynox DCR-150 on the DA 18-55 AL II kit lens and the DA 55-300 ED. I used my K20D body, aperture set to F8 and the focus ring set to infinity.

DA 18-55 AL II @ 18mm
Unusable due to vignetting, not a practical setting so I aborted this measurement

DA 18-55 AL II @ 35mm - Ruler visible 5.5"
Measured Values: Working Distance (WD) 207mm, Magnification Ratio (MR) 5.5:1
Calculated Values: WD 208, MR 5.95:1
DA 18-55 AL II @ 55mm - Ruler visible 3 5/8"
Measured Values: WD 208mm, MR 3.625:1
Calculated values: WD 208mm, MR 3.788:1
DA 55-300 ED @ 55mm - Ruler visible 3 9/16"
Measured Values: WD 208mm, MR 3.5625:1
Calculated values: WD 208mm, MR 3.788:1
DA 55-300 ED @ 100mm - Ruler visible 2"
Measured Values: WD 208mm, MR 2:1
Calculated values: WD 208mm, MR 2.1:1
DA 55-300 ED @ 200mm - Ruler visible 1"
Measured Values: WD 208mm, MR 1:1
Calculated values: WD 208mm, MR 1:1
DA 55-300 ED @ 300mm - Ruler visible 11/16"
Measured Values: WD 208mm, MR .6875:1
Calculated values: WD 208mm, MR .69:1
There you go. I didn't get out my calipers, so there are some minor measurement errors and I suspect that most of the differences are due to the error caused by the sensor in the K20D being slightly smaller than an inch.

So the conclusion? To get a similar result to a 100mm 1:1 lens, the DCR-150 on a 200mm lens.

you are just about right on the 200mm 1:1 ratio.

A Few Examples

And just to completely put a cherry on the top of this thread, here are a few shots taken with the Raynox on the 55-300mm at the Botanical Gardens here in Buffalo.

Without the diopter

With the diopter
