I already have a 24mm f2 lens - two, but who's counting. My dream lens would be something similar to the Pentax-M 100mm f2.8, although it could be 90mm to 135mm. I don't think it would have to be much faster than f2.8, but it would have to be fairly sharp close to the maximum aperture. It would also have to focus closer than the typical old non-macro primes that you find in this range. A macro lens is overkill here in size and quality, and complicates the focus mechanism. The M100/2.8 size is ideal, an integral hood would be nice, say focus to 2 ft./.7m, leave off WR.

The way Pentax works, since they already have the old 100mm macro and the new 100mm WR macro, they could easily release a third lens close to 100mm, well before they address the reasonably priced prime lens gap between 21mm and 35mm.

My dream lens for Manual is my 135mm F3.5 Hehe, works like a charm.
For Digital, it would have to be 55-300mm.

These are my Dream lenses... for now.

That one. 28mm f/1.4 DA*

Fast and silent AF please. Small, within reason. Would be moderately expensive I'd imagine.

Pentax needs another big gun....

I was going to say a FA 800 ltd to replace the A1200 on a cropped sensor, but then I thought, that won't help much with future FF, so what the hell....FA 1200 ltd.

Oh..crap...I forgot the 645. OK, a new FA*645 600 as well....

OK, here's a dream: a 28/2.8 tilt-shift-rise-drop-swing lens, full movements, full control. It would be big, would probably need a 70-80mm image circle (vs 30+ for APS-C, 45+for FF, ~60 for the 645D). If 28 isn't possible, then a 35. Yeah, that should do. Turn our K20D's and K7's into field view cams.

Dream lens.....hmmm, I am very happy with the ones I have. However, I would like a 24-28mm F2.0 or F2.4 with build quality like the DA limiteds. The length should be less than 5cm (2 inches).

Kind regards

Right now, I would love a good quality long AF telephoto or long zoom. Right now, it's compromise. I have a Sigma 70-300, a Tak 200/f4 and an M42 2xTC, and an Opteka 500mm mirror. The Tak and the mirror are ok but I would like something with AF. The Sigma is doing the job, especially at the shorter end of the zoom but is too short and slightly soft at 300. The "macro" feature on the Sigma is nice but this time the lens is too big. A shorter, real 1:1 macro.

lars, are you sure that f2 is enough for you? I mean for a dream lens, that seems to be a lil bit conservative dont you think? why not make it f1.4 ?

If the DA* 50-135mm had a real auto-focus mechanism, it would also be my dream lens. As it is, I have to settle for the SDM compromise.
agreed

Or even just the in-body screwdrive AF would make me happy

But Marc, aren't there actually fairly many lenses that come very close?
Depends on what you mean by close, I guess. The only small primes in this range that I know are long out of production and none that I am aware of have built in hoods. Most are of course MF. As far as I know, there are no 24mm lenses with 49mm filter size (?), and I'd give that up if I could *everything* else (but the existence of the DA21 gives me hope).

What is the current lens close to these specs that you find the best for you?
I know the Pentax M & A 28/2's are relatively small and they do take a 49mm filter. If they released a DA Limited WR version of the same basic formula, that would be fine by me, and having it f/2 would satisfy those who say there's no point to a prime that isn't f/2 (for me, there is: size).

The K & A 24/2.8's are more or less the same size, although they do go to 52mm filters, as does the Sigma 24/2.8. So obviously going wider can mean a larger front even for a slower lens.

Which is why I sort of suspect a 26/2.4 would be doable compromise if someone were to want to go wider than 28.

Anyhow, right now, I'm using the M28/2.8, and I like it well enough. If it were a mm or two wider I wouldn't complain. I could try to scare up an FA28/2.8 or another smallish AF 28/2.8, but the M28/2.8 is actually holding me over just fine. I'd gladly replace it with the lens I've described, though - perhaps just slightly wider, hopefully a little faster, but with AF, WR, and that integrated hood.

oh yeah, I forgot about the Sigma 150/2.8 macro in K-mount. for $700 bucks, that is a steal and would certainly get one in a heartbeat.

Actually, my dream lens is this one I already own. The M 100 f/2.8 impresses me more every time I use it. Faster? It could be. Focus in spur of the moment would be more challenging with a faster f-stop which I'd rather leave to ISO in that case. Another plus; no extra debt involved!

It's perfectly balanced (in both weight and looks) on the K-x as well

I have the A version of this lens and I absolutely love it! Beautifully built, with that beautiful manual focus feel, excellent IQ and best of all it was cheap. One of the many Pentax lenses that I doubt I will ever sell. Some shots taken with the A100mm f2.8.
