it's a great lens but has ca wide open. however, a shallow dof with 180 fov doesn't work

I know this, but is it the best buy out there?

I'd be using it primarily for architecture and concerts, so the non-shallow dof doesnt bother.

Here are a few user reviews of the fisheye: https://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/showproduct.php?product=151&cat=43

I'd say that it's the best fisheye zoom Pentax has to offer, but prime alternatives (SMC-A 16mm) are obviously a bit sharper.

For 180 degree view there are no alternatives as the other available fish eyes are FF fish eyes and wont give 180 on APS-C.

I borrowed 1 for a week, loved it and plan on getting 1 soon.
In my opinion the price is pretty good for what you get, however there are more affordable fisheye lenses out there that take incredible pictures as well.

It's pretty good optically (expecially toward the wide end) except if you can't live with PF, you will hate it. But being so wide it tends to focus on the background instead of the people in front because each AF sensor of Pentax DSLRs covers quite a large area. The AF system simply drawn to the high contrast background sometimes.

I usually MF unless I just won't have the time, so NBD.

Can you link me to the prime fisheye you speak of?

Don't let the price put you off, this is 1 high quality lens
eBay: FISH-EYE ZENITAR K 2.8/16 LENS PENTAX K MOUNT (item 290136893378 end time Jul-14-07 00:55:03 PDT)
Several members here use the very model, and love it.

My reasons for getting the Pentax when it's time is because the local dealer helps me out, so I support him whenever possible, plus he's cutting me a deal on it.

I just took another look at your lens collection and realized that you don't have a macro listed yet.
It's just my opinion, but looking at Indiana Dunes post I think that you'd be better off buying a dedicated macro lens first.

I'm not knocking your pictures on the thread, it just looks like your already starting to take macro's.

If you need a wide angle lens in the meantime some of us might be able to help you get started on panoramics. That way you can make a 360 degree picture.

to be a fisheye with the sensor crop the lens has to be atleast 10mm or wider.

wouldn't here be vignetting with that lens on a 1.5x crop body?

It gives full 360 degree view like a sphere look on full frame SLR.

The vignetting could be cut out. Its effect is cool like a real fish eye

I'm a big fan of the Zenitar, but here are examples of several different fisheyes:
