Tamron AF70-300mm Di-Problem?

I just got my new lens yesterday, help me if I'm wrong but shouldn't the adjustment that goes from 70 to 300 change the focus and move the lens in or
out - well if so mine is not doing this.I am a newbie to Dslr so I not sure Help?

ok you are thinking about varifocal lenses. This was typical of the older one touch (pump action) zooms where if you changed the focal length, your focus changed too.

These types of lenses, the focus stays the same as you zoom in and out.
