I too am interested on picking up a viitar teleconverter however I am not sure of the quality of it. From what I can tell it is a 4 element teleconverter. But the one I was looking at was for both a ricoh and pentax mount. It should mount on no problem but you'd lose all autofocus abilities but I believe aperture is unaffected.

There are either three or four versions of the Vivitar PK TCs made by different manufacturers (as with most of their optics). Some are "more adequate" than others. IME, none are as desireable as the more expensive Tamron or Kenko brands.

The best news is that (as I recall) the optic elements are easily removed from any of them to make very robust, stackable 24-26mm (#2) extension rings which can produce some interesting close-up possibilities with most lenses.

The Vivitar 2X Variable Macro TC exists in both PK and PK/A mounts and is generally considered a better macro accessory than a tele-extender.

I've found one of these for $20. Is it worth it?

Is it pK mount or is it pK-A mount?

If it is pK-A, it's well worth $20. If it is pK, it depends on how desperate you are.

Frankly, I haven't found a 2X TC worth using as is. When I say "it's well worth $20," I mean it as an extension tube with the optics removed.

Not sure what you mean by "aperture is unaffected."

But the effective aperture of the lens + 2X TC combo is 2 times the aperture setting of the lens. For example, if the lens is set at F/5.6, the effective aperture is F/11.

what I meant from aperture unaffected is that I think they teleconverter still allows the camera to control the aperture blades. Therefore you do not have to select it manually. but yes an image that was F8 is F16 with a 2x teleconverter like you mentioned.

I've just dismantled it today, taking the lens elements out of the unit, converting it to a macro ring....
I found myself not using it: quality not good enouhgh, only manual focus.
