Is the Tamron 17-50 a direct competitor of the Canon 17-40L?

Hmmm - those Tamron pictures do make a good case for it. And I thought that you folks here would help me see my way clear to one particular solution. Its looking like its coming down to the DA*16-50 if I want weather sealing - no one has suggested that my idea of the WR kit lens and another lens like the 31 or 35 Ltd would be a good way to go.

I also thought it interesting that while several people suggested the Tamron, no one mentioned the Sigma (the one I was thinking about is almost as much as the 31, so that's probably a good thing).

While I have nothing against the DA 16-45, if I'm going to get a better lens I'd like to also upgrade the speed of the lens to f2.8 (or faster). It's always nice to have that extra speed/smaller DOF.

Yes it is. The Tamron's optics are L quality all the way. Avoid the newer VC model as it isn't as good as the non VC version for some odd reason. I just received my K-7 and will probably sell the 18-55mm WR lens to help fund the purchase of either a Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 or Pentax 17-70 SDM lens.

I agree, if you read through these 164 reviews of the 17-50mm, you will often see Canon reviewers using the words "L glass and Tamron 17-50" in the same sentence, comparatively.
