Sigma 50-150 & DA 50-135 - Which is more reliable?

I was planning to buy DA 50-135 but then found that many people are facing reliability issue with 50-135mm. Also, now it is out of stock at most of the places.

Heard some good (and a few poor) things about Sigma 50-15 HSM. However, Sigma is cheaper by approx $250 compared to 50-135.

While I am okay with a bit lesser performance, I am primarily concern about reliability of both. Being in India, I really do not want to get into service issues.

I really need help deciding. Can someone share their experience with both the lenses from the reliability perspective.

Thanks a lot

Pentax offers a 1 year warranty, vs Sigma I believe 5 year or 10 in Canada warranty.
Pentax has some serious problems with the SDM failing (motordrive) whereas Sigma rarely has problems with theirs.

If I didn't have a Pentax service facility within easy access I know which lens I would choose, and it wouldn't be the Pentax.

Proud Owner of Pentax 50-135 2.8

Upgrading to bigger glass is problematic. I recently bought the Pentax 50-135 2.8 for the pentax forums member 4 $%^$^$^$750fdafdsa dollars He said it had 900 clicks, I gave it another 1000 real fast. It is beautiful, It has not failed on me. I did notice that when it goes from left to right(close to infinity) it clunks. I stopped and turned it left to right several times and then it performed or behaved very well, not that it was not already. Scared myself one time, but it was in manual.
You have to buy from someone who you trust. I got mine form the forums via paypal from a Canadian member.
I believe that the newest batches of lenses should be excellent but a screw-drive update in necessary to have as back-up especially at a wedding, everything else you can retake but not a wedding! You do not need to fail at the most inopportune moment.
It get sharper if you close the aperture
Soft corners and borders at 200mm and 2.8(dreamy) all telephoto lenses do this
Inside settings 2.8 or biggest aperture, ISO 800-1000, 1/60
Colors and crisp and vibrant and super nice on the 50-135 2.8 pentax! I cannot speak of Sigma. I now need a wide angle, Was thinking of getting sigma 28-70 2.8 but i read it has a yellow tint, I'll save my money and get the 16-50 2.8 from pentax for my K-x

Yes, that's the reason I am leaning towards Sigma. BTW, since 50-135mm is out of stock everywhere, any chance that Pentax is coming out with a newer design to address the SDM issues?

I too am trying to make this decision. However I can't seem to find any of either lens available in Canada.

I had an opportunity toi try sigma on D40. I have to say, I was impressed by sharpness, very smooth bokeh and focus speed. MTF charts shows very similar optical formula for these two lenses, however, sigma is sharper at corners, has less CA's and is faster at focusing I guess. Pentax is a bit sharper on the center and has more CA's, do like it's weather sealing though. It is hard choice but I'd go for sigma, it is one of the best lenses ever.

I bought a refurbished 50-135 just 3 weeks ago - it was an (sort of) impulse buy at a show. Being refurbished it only had 6 months warranty. I then started reading about all the problems and so returned it less than 2 weeks later. During that time I took a few shots and they were excellent. I have since bought the Sigma for the same price (as the second hand Pentax) and with 3 years warranty. The IQ is excellent and I don't think there is too much of a difference between the 2 lenses. I still keep on thinking whether I should have stuck with the Pentax but it was too big a risk with only 6 months warranty.
Hope this has helped.
Best of luck and wassalam.
