Pentax FA* vs DA*. Who is a winner ?

I have Pentax DA* 16-50mm. At 16-24mm f2.8 everything was very soft. The image didn't start to sharpen up until f5.6. When shooting at 16mm nothing was sharp. How about FA* (28-70mm) ?

Well how can you compare them? Your stating that between 16-24mm its soft until stopped down to F/5.6 whereas the FA*'s widest end is 28mm. If you want a lens sharper than the DA* between 16-24 and an aperture less than F/5.6 the 28-70mm is not what you want...

First of all, you may have a lens that is decentered. My 16-50 is soft between 16 and 18mm and f2.8 (sharpens up nicely at f4), but otherwise is quite sharp throughout. The issue in comparing the FA* lenses to the DA* lenses is that the FA lenses were created for full frame 35mm cameras and so their focal lengths are different -- 16-50 versus 28-70 and 50-135 versus 80-200. Hard to compare those two, particularly since your issues seem to be on the wide end.

Maybe your camera/lens combination has a front/back focusing issue.

I was seeing issues with sharpness on my DA*, but then I realized that it was actually a BF/FF issue. Check that out first.

Well you had to test the 28-70 on a FF camera then. But since there is only film with Pentax for now this would introduce a whole bunch of other picture quality affecting factors.

But if the 28-70 is anything like the FA* 24 the 16-50 beats it easily (at 24mm).

the fa*28-70 is much better than 16-50. the 16-50 is very soft at the edge wide open. but the 28-70 is much bigger and heavier
