which lens is sharper? DA 18-55 al II or A 35-105mm f3.5

Hello all,
Which lens is sharper? DA 18-55 al II or A 35-105mm f3.5. I have an opportunity to borrow a friend's 18-55 al II, but I like the quality of the 35-105mm. I'm going into the city, and there is a spot for a great view of the city (boston) and water. I would hate to miss out on the whole view with the 35-105mm b/c I didn't have the 18-55mm. Or will it be negligible? I would like to make a 13x19 if the shot turns out well.

Thanks in advance.

First I'm curious why you wouldn't take both lenses? I've owned the A 35-105 and the earlier version of the 18-55mm. The A is very sharp lens, in fact it can be compared favourably against many prime lenses. The kit lens although very good, would loose that head to head test.

The other thing you can do for wider shots is shoot to stitch the shots together later. 4 or 5 images side by side can make a great panoramic photo.

thanks for reply. I guess I was being lazy about changing lenses when I was in field. duh moment for me, i guess it's not much to take both lol. As far as stitching, It'll be my first time, so we'll see how I do with tripod.

If you are only taking scenary, I'm quite sure you will find 35mm not quite wide enough

I too avoid changing lenses out in the open

Faced with this situation, I would depend on the 18-55

I've got both those lenses...the 35-105 A is sharper in my opinion.

Well, 35mm is a bit on the long side (or normal lets say ).

Indoors and cramped areas I use more the kit lens than the sigma 28-70 f/2.8 which is a beautiful lens because 18mm gives you a lot more freedom then 28mm, let alone 35mm.

In wide open areas, I think 35mm is just fine.

So, if 35 mm is your widest lest, you, at least, need the kit lens or the DA 16-45mm.

The A 35-105mm f3.5 was the sharpest zoom lens, M or AF, I've ever used. Although I didn't pixel-peep, the quality seemed on par with that of the Limited lenses that I have. Big and heavy, and built like a tank, or Oprah,, I felt it was just too much for me to handle.

However, I prefer the 18-55 AL II in good light as it is a fantastic lens for city/landscape photography, my choice of one or two lenese for beach trips.
