I think that it would be helpful to prepare a poll. Every Pentaxians could contribute for exampole on "the best two zooms".

A few websites may help to list the relevant zooms among which:
Pentax SMC DA 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 ED[IF] Fisheye
Pentax DA 12-24mm f/4 AL ED [IF]
Pentax SMC-DA 16-45mm f/4 ED AL
Pentax SMC-DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED [IF] SDM
Pentax SMC-DA 17-70mm f/4 AL [IF] SDM
Pentax SMC-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL
Pentax SMC-DA 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 ED AL [IF]
Pentax SMC-FA 20-35mm f/4 AL
Pentax SMC-DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 ED [IF] SDM
Pentax SMC-DA 50-200mm f/4-5.6 ED
Pentax SMC-DA* 60-250mm f/4 ED [IF] SDM
Pentax SMC-FA* 80-200mm f/2.8 [IF] ED
Pentax SMC-DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED
just for the Pentax zooms.

A few others include:
Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 LD Di macro
Sigma AF 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC
Sigma AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC
Sigma AF 18-125mm f/3.5-5.6 DC
Sigma 18-250mm OS HSM

PS: List obtained from photozone.de.

Look forward to contribute to the poll...

I was hoping to get a more common database of the best Pentax Mount Zooms based on this thread. After-which I can make a poll of which is the best zoom among the top choices. Would that be a nice idea?

Lenses I am willing to pay for:
A 35-70/4
A 35-105/3.5
A 28-135/4
A 70-210/4 (not quite as sharp by today's standard but great in its days)
F/FA* 250-600/5.6
FA* 80-200/2.8 (prone to break PZ switch)
DA 10-17 fisheye (CA control could be better)
DA 12-24/4 (CA control could be better)

Great optics but not quite make it:
FA* 28-70/2.8 (ill-designed extended barrel and prone to break PZ switch)
FA 20-35/4 (cheaply build)
FA 28-70/4 (very cheaply build and self-milky AL)
DA 16-45/4 (great optics let down by loose build)
DA* 16-50/2.8 (can you trust SDM?)
DA* 50-135/2.8 (can you trust SDM?)
DA* 60-250/4 (can you trust SDM?)

I doubt it would produce better data than simply looking at the Lens Review section of this site and listing the top-rated zooms.

Marc,
You are right. The Lens reviews section is a good place to start. It would help however if the Pentaxforums.com data base could be sorted (eg by rating) and if there was an option to compare lenses from different sub-categories (eg Pentax and Third-party).

This might be a future enhancement of the forum database.

I agree.. its the way I go for all my purchases and also read B&H reviews from users if available.

I rate the FA43 for example as one of the best lenses around yet it gets bagged by some people... you really have to way up everything about a lens based on YOUR requirements and what you are willing to pay.

cheers

Neil

Hope this could also be made as a feature in the lenses review database. Some sort of filtering or sorting feature. Happy Easter!

I have an old Tokina SD 80-200/2.8 that stands up really well against my 60-250 (which would also be on anyone's top ten list).
