NEW Pentax SMC 330mm f 5.6

I took my 6 x 7 165mm f 2.8, coupled it to my Tamron BBar MC7 2x TC & 67 to pk adapter to make this lens. Below are some shots to show its IQ--minimum PPing is used, to compensate for effects of downsize. I compare this setup to my SMC (K) 300mm f 4 & it has advantages:

Close Focus: 5.25 feet +1

Weight: Less than K 300 f 4, around 900 grams +1

Tri-pod collar: Yes, built into 67 to PK adapter +1

Speed: f 5.6 -1

Reach: 30mm or %10 more than 300 f4 K lens +1

IQ & Sharpness--you decide

I'm sure, in the right light, the lens can do better--these shots were quickly put together for the thread. Getting to know the lens will only make the results better.

Cost: under $100 Lucky w 165 on Ebay 2 years back. +1

Axl, I have given away all my point & shoots--all that is left is the K20d and some film cameras. I'll take a shot of the lens setup, minus the K20, when I get a chance.

For now, I have been exploring the lens' excellent close focus capabilities. At 330mm, with 5.25 feet close focus ability, this baby delivers the magnification. Here are a couple I got while learning with the lens today. It is looking like the SMC (K) f4, 300mm is going up for sale--there is no way it can do these things for me.

BTW, this lens has most excellent bokeh. The 1st shot is @ f8 & the 2nd one @ f16 on the aperture ring. No cropping.

Axl, there is only one thing I give up to my SMC f4, and that is a stop of speed. But look what I get in return:

Close Focus (much better) 3x
Ca control (much better)
little lighter
shorter
tri-pod collar
IQ is better too
I like the images I'm getting @ f16 & f22 as well

What I am especially loving is the close focus capabilities. I'd have to do the math, but @ 330mm and 5.25 feet we are talking serious magnification. I love this kind of shooting and will gladly give up a stop for this alone.

But, more importantly, the overall IQ is, IMO, better on the 165mm 2.8 plus TC. Shooting a Medium Format 67 on the small crop sensor means the sweetest of the sweet spots is being used, meaning little distortion given up to the TC and evenness to the corners.

IQ is better?
wow, I'd never expect prime with 2x TC to beat other prime!

anyway, I'm really interested in the look of the rig... if you can put some other lens next to it, would be great so I can imagine the size...

thanks!

Yes, what you say I can understand but, remember, this is a Medium Format prime compared with the FF Prime.

To facilitate your envisioning, I'll take a shot of the lens setup, alongside of the my SMC 300 f4. I am excitedly awaiting the arrival, from Lithuania, of an Ensinor 24mm, 2.8, Macro. When I get this, I shoot the 2 lenses--will serve 2 purposes at once for me. Multi-tasking even gets into my photography.

Best!

This really is an excellent lens, at minimal cost. Love manual focus in situations like these, where you are shooting through brush--AF just can't do this. No PPing just a touch of sharpening.
