DA21mm Limited or Tamron 17-50mm f2.8?

Hi guys, i am looking for a lens that is wide enough for indoor shots and scenery, and also good for low light situation.

Have narrowed down my options to these 2 - the DA 21 Ltd and the Tamron 17-50 f2.8, but i really do not know which to go for. The reviews for both lenses seem acceptable to me, but i havent got the chance to test them. I wonder what people with experience with either of the lens think?

Which one should i get?

Should i consider the Tamron 28-70 f2.8 also? Is the difference from 17-28 big?

Thanks for the help!

Sorry, but I don't quite understand why you're deciding between two so different lenses. What is it actually that you're after?

I have the same questions. I wanna buy a DA 21 Ltd or DA* 16-50, either will make my lens group to cover the 15-50 range... My consideration is the 16-50 is too heavy and make the FA31 FA43 useless...But the DA 21 Ltd is much higher than it should be right now...

hi, the main thing i am going for is a wide-angle lens capable of taking shots in low light situations. these two lenses do fit the bill for me and that's why i am considering them both.

the difference between 17mm versus 21mm (4mm difference) is big enough, so much more for a 28mm or 11mm difference.

Depending on what kind of "indoor shots and senery" you want to take, 21mm many times is not wide enough.

I took these shots last week with K10D + DA 21. I wish I had had the DA 15 with me, especially for the interior shot.

wow, nice shots there! yes, it could be wider. maybe 17mm could come in handy at times. as for IQ and colour rendition - do they suffer much more than the DA21? i know there surely will be a loss. but, is it great?

also, is the DA21 at largest f3.2 lose out in low light situations?

Has anyone tried stitching with the DA21?

Stitching has become pretty easy nowdays, even if you don't rotate around the exact right point.

I finally decided to get a DA 21mm, the classic view angle cannot be missed...

I have both the 21 DA ltd and the 17-50 Tamron (and Pentax kit 18-55).

The 21 Ltd is small and light, great image quality. Good for hiking/biking with the K-x. The K-x and 21 combo looks like a simple point and shoot, great for taking unobtrusive shots. Buy the 21 Ltd, and if it doesn't work for you, can always sell it for near (or more!) what you paid for it. A classic lens, old school, pure velvet.

I replaced the K-x kit kens with the 17-50 Tamron, but not really sure it's worth the extra money. It is big and heavy, but that's what fast zoom glass is. Extremely sharp, faster than the kit lens. Not sure if the K-x shake reduction works right with this lens, but I haven't had a chance to really test it.

If you have the kit 18-55, I'd stick with that, and buy the 21 Ltd (or 15 Ltd!). The kit lens is so cheap, I almost consider it a disposable lens, and use it when it is wet and nasty outside - still, a pretty good lens itself.

If I had to do it all over, I'd buy the 15 Ltd, and the Tamron 17-50, but of course, that's more money...

I nearly bought the DA 21 also, but I ended up buying the Sigma 17-70 instead. I have to say I'm very pleased with that decision. I much prefer having the flexibility of a zoom. IMO the 17-70 doesn't give up much in IQ over the 21 prime.

does the IQ of the tamron 17-50 lose out much to the DA21?

I'm not getting into the prime vs zooms argument - that's like debating the existence of God. There will never be a consensus.

But if I had to carry around one prime lens and no others the DA21 would be the 'Goldilocks' lens - not too short, not too long, just right. You can get far enough to get wide angle; but you can get up close to focus on specific subjects. It's fast enough to take excellent shots in low light (particularly with the K-x). It was a b*gger focusing on my K10D but on the K7 and K-x behaves itself nicely. And it's tiny, which comes very high on my scale of priorities. (Actually the FA28 comes into the same category but I sold it, now to my regret).

When I'm travelling with other people and still want to be on speaking terms at dinner, the Sigma 17-70 or Pentax 24-90 are my preferences. But alone with a bit of time on my side the DA21 does the job, abetted by the DA15 on the one hand and the DA40 + K105 f/2.8 on the other.

The difference between 17 and 28 is enormous.

Hope that helps.

I now own the DA Limited 15, 35, 40, and 70 lenses. I once owned a DA LTD 21mm.

I think the 21mm and 40mm are the Goldilocks lenses. I'd like another copy of the 21mm.

I went on my honeymoon with only a 21mm, and it worked out great. Wide enough for a lot of stuff, not too wide to shoot people (the 15mm is too wide for people), small enough to bring along (the 17-50mm f2.8 is a monster in comparison and just too big). Nice lens, underrated, very useful.

I too had to make this decision--I chose the Tamron--so glad I did. The Da 21 is a beautiful lens, but I get more from my Tamron than I ever could get from the Da 21ltd. Best of Luck to you.
