Since I put up this post, I've bought some big glass through some lucky finds and good opportunities.

My first pickup was the 1000mm Reflex. This lens is silly fun, sometimes it's even hand-holdable, but it is wicked hard to focus, especially when shooting at objects at a very long distance.

Here's one sample

It was also a windy day, and I now know why I need a good tripod. Interestingly, the 1.7x afa tele was able to focus this lens on a shady day, but it was too windy for the shots to turn out.

As for the donut bokeh, they're not great, and the color rendition seems a little washed out.

My second pickup through the forums was the FA* 300/4.5. I really only have good things to say about this lens, and it's still super sharp when you throw the 1.7x afa tele on it. It's also relatively light, so it's easy to pack up into our mountains.

I know you cant see it from the scaled down version of this pic, but when I zoomed in digitally, I could still see the clouds in this gopher's eye. This is the FA* 300 with the 1.7x afa.

I thought I was done procuring long glass at this point, but I found an EX DG Bigma in our local classifieds in like new condition. Here's a shot at 500mm

The lens performs better than I expected from the feedback on the forums, but maybe I just have a good copy. Had I picked up the bigma first, I'm not sure I could have justified the FA* 300.

Right now, I'm hunting for the 2000mm Reflex, but alas the only copy out there for sale looks hammered, and is in Poland.
The Bigma often gets bashed, but I personally find it a very useful and good lens. It has its quirks, but can produce very sharp images at all focal lengthes.

For the 2000mm reflex: I would consider this a collector's item. Unless you are hauling a very massive tripod with a matching head (something like a geared head) around, you will have difficulties to produce a single sharp shot with it. To get any contrast, you'ld need a lens hood app. the same length as the lens - and that is going to catch the slightest wind and vibrate.

What would I buy? What I can afford. It's not what I would like to own but it works when I do it right. My current 400 and up setup is an Opteka (Sakar) 500/8 mirror which does ok when the light is good and a 200/4 Tak with 2x converter which does a very fine job but is quite heavy.

My gauwd, this has to be the mother of all polls. A big-arse poll to go with the big-arse lenses. Kudos for quite the effort there Clinton. n Too bad I missed on the voting.

I like how 26% of the people polling picked the FA* 600/4 lens. I never realized that 1 in 4 Pentaxians had one.

the poll was IF you COULD buy, not do you own,

There is an old saying, "If only my aunt had balls....."

sure I would love one, but no way will I ever own one

We could try to get Adam to reopen the poll for a month window and see if the numbers change. Again though, you can't vont on the a* 1200mm unless you own one

Bump, I did my voting. Thanx for asking Adam to re-open voting Clinton.

I didn't look close enough before, but once I was analyzing all the choices to choose what I'd buy if I had the means, I was curious to find 300/4 lenses on the list, but not 300/2.8 lenses on it; but found one never released in Pentax mount (the Sigma 200-500/2.8). I personally am a lover of 300/2.8 + TCs so that I can have both reach and speed w/a wider focal range when needed.

Sure enough. When I originally put this poll together, I put together some of the more common combos on the forums involving the more common TC/lens combinations. There's enough to offer in the 300mm category that the lens list became even more unruly when I started including all of them. I'd say just vote as close as possible.

p.s. not sure if you looked @ my lens line-up but what I did get was a Sigma 300 f/2.8 plus matching 1.4x and 2x TCs. What I wish I could have gotten was the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 if Sigma only released it in our mount. :ugh: And I would have used that lens about 10x more than I've used my 300 prime. ... I'm sure for most of us the longer the prime the more specialized and the less one uses it unless they're making a living with it or serious about their hobby and hitting the bush/blind very often.

heh, I'm just noticing that 3 people voted for the 3 wolf moon lens.

You'll also have to hire a manservant to carry that around for you:

the review over there is pretty cool though Juza Nature Photography

I think the $29,000 price would be enough to steer anyone clear...
