I have a 55-300 I purchased when I bought my k7. I also have the 18-55, and my wife has a kx with a kit lens.

Recently I noticed the 55-300 focus ring seemed as though it had sand in it. Sort of scratchy when I turned it. I use MF/AF about 50/50. The AF seems to still work ok, but I'm 99% sure it was smooth when I bought it about 6 months ago. Anybody else have this problem? Both of the kit's are still smooth. This happens on or off the cameras.

Hard to know what's happening but I suspect that something is amiss with the gears in the AF drive. Maybe the quick shift is out of alignment. It should still be under warranty, send it in right away to have it repaired.

i bought mine used from a reputable member here and was assured that is as new. It also feels like there is sand in the focusing ring.

Its by far the worst lens I've ever used for MF feel period. The optics however are incredible for the price

No problem with mine either, however, I feel it has never been silky smooth, just a little metal to metal sort of feel. Perhaps, as it is still under warranty, I would get it checked out if I were you.

Just to fill in, my 16-45mm has this same feeling as well. However, I think its just the plastic rubbing together as you turn the focusing ring. I have had this lens for 3 years now and it has never gave me any problems whatsoever.

Are you sure you are not expecting the feel of a true manual focus lens? Their ring just "glides" when you turn it.
Some friction is normal for lenses like this. It should be about same degree as the feel you get with the kit lens.
