Tamron 17-50mm issues?

I recently bought a Tamron 17-50 to replace a kit lens in a KX. I read many good reviews on it. My copy seems to take very soft, out of focus pics especially toward the 50 mm range and it focus hunts excessively even in good light. Has anyone had similar issues? It has a 6 yr warranty. I suppose I should send it back and have it looked at/calibrated?

Try cleaning the contacts on your camera first. Doesn't cost anything but a few moments of your time & may solve the problem.

If not, send it in for service.

Sorry to hear this, but before you give up on it - check the basics of the lens, mechanically and electrically.

Then post some examples of your soft images for more constructive feedback.

Try manual focusing the lens to see if the problem is optical or related to the focusing mechanism.

Search online for "cleaning camera mount contacts" and you should find plenty of links.

You can gently rub the contacts with the eraser on a pencil. BTW, I have had my Tamron 17-50mm for 2 years now & do not experience hunting, not even in low light. There is surely something wrong with yours & cleaning the contacts will not hurt. The turn around time with Tamron is declared to be 14 days--not too bad, though still awful to deal with.

I am guessing there are no focus adjustments to be made with the Kx body--that is a shame. I have a K20d, though I have not had to use the Auto-focus adjust with any lenses yet. Still, as you now know, it is a great feature to have with a body.

I own a WR 18-55 Pentax. It is a good little lens, but in no way compares to the Tamron, especially when shooting at longer distances. I hope you are able to get the lens functioning properly, because it is a great upgrade which you will enjoy immensely. Best of Luck.

Take pictures with it, and check to see that your subject is in focus--that is the basic check. You can do more precise checking with charts, but you should know if the lens focuses properly or not--just chimp immediately after taking a shot.
