Lens hood question?

What is the open thing for? Sorry if this might be a stupid question.

It allows you to rotate a circular polarizer filter without removing the whole hood to do it.

Personally I find it easier to just remove the hood and manipulate the filter.

Oh! thank you, I thought it was like... to release any rain that might have been caught in the hood.

Is that really what it's for!? lol. I read somewhere that it's to let light into the lens from the ground for blah blah blah reason.
