If it's indoor sports (or outdoor in the evening), none of those will do unless the light is good.

I still haven't taken my 55-300 into the bush for wildlife. It's getting time to do so.

i agree with sterretje. all those are great in the day, but rather poor performers in poor lighting.

you might like to check out the faster alternatives available too.

They're not all that different from each other in speed, in light of that I'll go for the longer reach, in this case that would be the 55-300mm

Consideration should be also taken on the weight, I only used DA 50-200, very nice lens, light weight, really sharp at f/8 while handling with Shake reduction.

i am fairly new to photgrapghy and not quite sur eby what you mean by what ohyouloveme means by a faster lense, as i was hoping to find a lense that would work indoor for hockey games as well as for thewildlife shots.

A "faster" lens is one that has a larger maximum aperture and thus can let in more light. So, it is better at shooting in low-light situations.

I have the DA55-300 and though I rarely shoot telephoto, when I do need it, it does the job. It's sharper than the corresponding Sigma (which I have used) and the DA50-200 (which I have not). For the range covered and IQ it is a no-brainer.

eclipse of the moon

A New Year's Eve eclipse. My last photo for 2009. The shadow of the Earth has now moved on. No special equipment used. Luckily we had a clear night.

The lens also has excellent colour and nice bokeh, IMO.

To get a lens faster than f5.6 @ 300m is very expensive. Just that one extra stop in speed (from 5.6 to 4) will cost an extra $1k. Most of us therefore make do with the 55-300 (which is the best of the consumer grade long tele zooms for Pentax) and shoot at higher iso as it gets darker. The faster 200mm+ options which would be ideal for indoor events are the DA*200, DA*60-250, DA*300. All are considerably more expensive than the 55-300.

here is a couple more, outside pictures seem for fast action like football or rodeos i can get descent pics, but i could not find my bear pictures or moose pictures that blurred when at the long distance and not moving or moving slowly, must have deleted them because they were bad, jand for concerts hard to work with to keep from going grainy like the pic below just wondering if the newer 55-300mm would work for concerts our would nee something f2.8 tele photo lense
