Pentax 12-24mm f4 or Sigma 10-20mm f3.5

Pentax 12-24mm f4 or Sigma 10-20mm f3.5, what do you guys think?

I want to get a super wide, but im not sure which one. this sigma is wider and faster, yet the pentax is way more expensive in my local shop the sigma is £569.99, and they dont sell the pentax, but i was under the impression that you could get one for about £800 online?

if i went for the pentax, would i just be buying the badge or is it seriously a better lens (dispite being slower)??

I've heard the 4 is sharper than the 3.5, but I've only used the 4, so I can't comment from personal experience.

I owned the 10-20/4-5.6 and sold it to get the 12-24/4, for both the constant aperture and due to the praise lavished upon it. It was a great upgrade in the end.

I read everything there was to be read and looked at many images. The DA12-24 is the one more pros who need to make money from a lens had. So that's what I got, even though I'm not in that category. (Of course most pros who need wide angle use full-frame, but that is another story.)

Avro CF-100 "Canuck"

This has a fair amount of PP and I think I deliberately added noise with the tinting.

outlook from Calle de Almanzora Baja

This shot, also from the DA12-24, has much less PP and so might make for a better benchmark. This is a versatile lens with excellent distortion control and rendering.

With last year's price rise it has beceome too expensive. Look for a used copy. Good luck!

yeah i will, i hadnt really thought about it but it is a good idea. thanks, and great photos. the first one is a niceshow of a how dramatic effect can be achieved with a wide angle lens, and the colours on tthe second one are great.

thanks

i think if you really want the 3.5, than get the 3.5. if you usually shoot landscape, i suggest you get the pentax one. i think the pentax one got better color

One thing you have to watch for with the 10-20 is nasty distortion at 10mm. The earlier 10-20 produced some rather severe distortion along the borders at 10mm, making is not as useful at the wide end of the lens. Before getting the new 10-20, I'd make sure Sigma's fixed or mitigated this issue in the new version of the lens. The Pentax may only get to 12, but it's a useable 12 corner to corner.

I agree with what others here have said about the 12-24's sharpness and color rendition, which is off the charts.

It all depends on your requirement; to me, the "20-24mm" end is more useful than the "10-12mm" end as I sometimes use it as walk-around lens including people face on it. Also, the 10mm wide end may also have some inherent distortion - so, even if I have it, I would not use it much. I also prefer the color rendition of the DA 12-24mm than the Sigma lens (I have the 18-50mm 2.8) - so, YMMV, I can also use the DA 12-24mm wide open pretty much most of the time.

Actually, I totally agree with that. I shoot mostly at 24mm but know I have the extra width for alleys and shots where I deliberately want to use perspective distortion for effect. But when I'm travelling light I just pop a 24mm prime in my pocket instead.

Hi, Robin, how are you? I agree... I have recently scored a Chinon multicoated 24mm f2.5 m42 lens - it is a real gem - the photos taken with the lens have a real pop -something like my FA 43mm ltd. And I use it (the 24mm) quite often - stuck on my K10D now.
