If you had a choice: Sigma 300mm f/2.8 EX DG vs. Pentax FA* 300mm f/2.8 ED IF [NOS?]

As the title asks, if you had a choice between two fantastic lenses both at about $2500 - $2600 ...

- A Pentax FA* 300mm f/2.8 ED IF lens -- 180-Day Limited Warranty (possibly NOS, [new old stock] possibly grey market)
-= vs =-
- A new Sigma 300mm f/2.8 EX DG lens -- non-grey market, full 4 year US warranty

...which would you choose? Would love to hear why if ya'd like ta share.

edits:

One knock against the Pentax lens... I don't think the lenshood is removable, making it too big/long to fit in my biggest of Tamrac Sling bags even off the camera let along on... I can leave the Sigma on the camera and just flip the lenshood and slide it in the bag. (going to Tanzania so I have to think about these things!)

One knock against the Sigma lens ... it's a special order w/a 2 month wait so there's no way I'd have it before leaving for Africa.

Errrrr....doesn't that make the decision for you?

I'd choose the FA* personally (assuming I had the bucks for it :-)

You are correct. The size of the Pentax 300 is a killer tho. I didn't realize the length before posting this query. That, and its weight given the 33lb limit I have with all my clothing and gear for a 10day Safari means the [edit] 80-200mm FA* f/2.8 might be more realistic. Will have to buy that grey market tho I think...

Hey m80, check this sitehttp://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/ It looks like the fa has a screw on hood (I would assume it reverses over the lens for transport). I'm tight so I got a used tamron 300mm f2.8 adaptall and really love it.

Lens hood or not the Pentax is the lens to get without question. I'm a big Sigma fan and own 3 of their lenses, all of which are very good. I don't own and have never shot with the 300mm. But there is something about the Pentax image quality that can't be beaten. My fav lenses are always Pentax like the Ltd's etc.

I'm sure you can find a simple solution around the hood issue.

I'd go for the Sigma, cause I have the 18/50 ex dg 2.8 and it's a great lens and even the hint of the word grey market and I'm outta there so it's nix for the Pentax. ken

As you are looking at a time limit I suppose that has major relevance unless you don't really need to take this lens on your trip. If not for that I think the Pentax has such fine quality color and bokah it is hard not to decide on it. Not that the Sigma is a slouch in those departments mind you.
I imagine you will be happy with either lens when it comes down to it.

Dang nab'it! Someone just bought the 80-200 FA* f/2.8 @ the buyitnow price of $1900 from the seller in Japan who posts a lot. Just when I thought I might be able to get away with getting it for $1700 or so on auction.

Ya, I definitely need the long lens for Tanzania. This week might be the make or break. If the good folks @ Sigma don't get word of getting the BigMa or 100-300 f/4 the next week, gunna have to pull the trigger on something on eBay; just may be that Pentax 300 f/2.8.

I will definitely go for Fa* version for the sake of colour and clarity of images it is capable of producing.

Sigma 300mm f2.8 is definitely sharp and the colour seems to be missing to a degree - more like white out or something (I tried it on canon body before). Corner is softer as well but no one really cares about this since centre image is more important in fast prime like this.

I am actually starting to hunt down long prime lately since 645D is not really around yet. Lack of choices in pentax long prime except the extremely heavy 250-600 or 600/4 made me hunt down the canon 500mm f4L IS in the end for my forth coming trip to S america and Japan.

lol ... guess what I bought! FA* in 300 prime $$$ was out of reach (when I saw them selling) and "un-had-able" anyway.

Results are good, seen here. Admittedly, I don't see the magic I see from Mo/Adam with his FA* 300mm.
