Vivitar MC Tele Converter question

Hi all

I'm a newbie here and to SLR camera use. I have a K110D Pentax and a 18-55mm lens. After borrowing an old zoom lense from a freind that came from an old Pentax film SLR, I was really impressed with shots I took at the British F1 GP. So, I went looking on ebay for some second hand lenses that I could try.
I bought a Vivitar MC Tele Converter 3x-22, it fits my camera fine, and the lense fits to it as well, however, the pictures come out really dark.
I put this down to an apperture problem, correct me if I am wrong. I'm not sure how to adjust this. The only way I can get a shot is if I increase the exposure time to 1 second.
Can anyone shed some light on what I have bought and maybe steer me in the direction of what I should search for on ebay next time.

If it is indeed a 3x TC, then it is going to multiply your aperture value by 3.

e.g. a f/4 lens combined with a 3x TC will become an f/12 lens (even when wide open).

It may be that there simply isn't enough light to automatically meter reliably in such a situation.
