Interested in seeing how many people are using older glass regularly, as opposed to owning it but using newer glass instead.
I hate you for asking this question, and I hate myself even more for answering it.
Fully 1/2 of the lenses I own are A series or earlier, and right now, all I have in my bag is FA LTD, DA LTD and DA* lenses.

Good question.

For a typical outing, I usually have my K-7 and the following lenses in my Domke:

M28/3.5
M50/1.7 (My M50/1.4 is usally on my MX, but sometimes I switch it and the 1.7.)
M135/3.5
DA70/2.4 Limited

Depending on where I'm heading (or what I'm planning on shooting, if there is a plan), I might very well have the K17/4 in the bag, too. Or maybe my only zoom, the DA 18-55 WR.

I've had the K-7 for just two months or so, and I'll bet the majority of the photos I've taken are with the M28/3.5, the M50/1.7, and the DA70/2.4. My newest lens, a Kiron 105/2.8 macro I received earlier this week, is likely to join that trio and take the M135's place in the bag. And I expect the K17/4 will work its way into the bag more and more, too.

But all my lenses see use, including my Fujinon EBC 55/3.5 macro. That makes 7 old lenses, and 2 new AF lenses, and that's about 78% old lenses.

But I sure love my DA70. . . .

I'd like to have a DA 16-45 to carry in place of the DA 18-55, but that's not going to happen any time soon--not since I've just bought the Kiron.

All my lenses are K series, except for one FA zoom which I never use anymore.

I recall reading that a Pentax Imaging rep monitors these forums. What will they draw from this poll? Most of a self-selected sample of wired Pentaxians prefer using older glass. Hmmm...

There's much discussion of new glass here on PFC, but maybe not quite balancing the talk of legacy lenses. How will this feed into Pentoya's development and marketing plans, if at all? How do we function as a corporate focus group?

Just wondering.

They don't monitor it a whole hell of a lot. However, according to the poll, everyone has some new glass. Pentax is currently making A 50mm f1.2 at their Vietnam Assembly plant so maybe they do get it at times.

I am assuming that when you say "older lens" you are referring to lenses that are no longer made by Pentax. The FA series of lenses are mostly not made, like the FA*80-200 f2.8 or the FA35 f2 etc, but some of the FA lenses are still made, ie the FA Limiteds and the FA50 f1.4, so these can be construed as being new lenses, I guess.

So, I have made by selection based on the fact that any lenses that are manufactured by Pentax are newer lenses and any lenses that are not still manufactured by Pentax are older lenses.

My older lenses:
A16mm f2.8 fish eye
FA20mm f2.8
A50mm f1.2
A50mm f1.4
FA50mm f2.8 macro
A100mm f2.8
FA*28-70 f2.8
FA*80-200 f2.8
FA*300 f4.5
A35-105 f3.5

My newer lenses:
DA14mm f2.8
DA15mm f4 Limited
FA31mm f1.8 Limited
DA35mm 2.8 macro Limited
FA43mm f1.9 Limited
FA50mm f1.4
DA*55mm f1.4
FA77mm f1.8 Limited
DFA100mm f2.8 macro
DA*300 f4
DA10-17 f3.5/4.5 FE zoom
DA12-24 f4
DA*16-50 f2.8
DA*50-135 f2.8
DA*60-250 f4

With only 4 modern lenses out of 55+ lenses I'd say I favour older glass. I don't think I'll bore you with the list.

I'm sure that they listen, but I'm not sure if they'd consider us a representative sample of their customers. We probably skew a little more serious/invested in our camera hobby, a little more knowledgeable, and a little older (maybe).

Some of their recent marketing, for example, targets multi-tasking soccer moms. I don't get the sense that that there are many of those here - and certainly not trying to win the K-x!

And there is sometimes a huge difference between your current market audience and the one that you want. Ask Oldsmobile.

I'm sure that they listen, but I'm not sure if they'd consider us a representative sample of their customers.
That's why I used the phrasing that I did. We're NOT representative -- but we're vocal, the party extremists. We've the older hands, sure, but also the newbies with questions and complaints. And we're international, skewed towards English-speakers (1st or 2nd language) and thus US-CA-UK-EI-AU-NZ-SA but with a fair number of Europeans -- and relatively few East and South Asians.

No, we're not representative. Not of a mass audience, nor of typical customers probably. But many of us own more than a few lenses. Many of our discussions seem to drive the purchase of more, better lenses, and more capable bodies. We're probably skewed towards advanced amateurs and independent pros.

I recall that in the PC world, for many years gamers were a relatively small slice of the total user base. But gamers, not spreadsheeters, drove the development of newer faster hardware. Advanced gamers (like my bro-in-law, a networked dogfight fanatic whose game room rather resembles a space-shuttle cockpit -- and he works as a printer!) demanded better performance, better graphics, faster response. Makers responded by developing the muscle-cars of PC-dom.

I don't know if I can draw a parallel. But we're the vocal portion of the customer base, the word-of-mouth viral marketers. Do we have some impact? I dunno.

The only "new" glass I have is the kit lens...and the only other autofocus lens is an older Sigma 70-300DL. Everything else is manual, I don't think I even have any "A" lenses.

I use older glass all the time; my best two lenses (the SMC Takumar 50mm f4 macro and the M35 f2) are both older and have generally replaced any newer lenses. I have the FA50 f1.7, but I've not really used it over the older MF 50's I have (a bunch). The only newer lens I use with some regularity is the Tamron 90mm AF Macro, but it has lost a good bit of it's time to the Tak, plus to the Vivitar S1 90mm macro, which I also have. The only other new lens I ever use is the DA kit lens, which I use once a year or so when I'm traveling.

Active Kit

I keep the following in a LowePro Slingshot 200AW, always ready to just pickup and go. I could, and probably should, sell everything else and be perfectly happy at my skill and activity level.

I consider this my "active" kit, so 40% are vintage lenses:

K10D w/ battery grip
Olympus XA

Mounted:
FA35/2

Pockets:
K28/3.5
FA50/1.4
M100/2.8 (unless exchanged for A35~105/3.5)
DA55~300

Hoods for manual lenses
Flash
Blower Bulb

The other stuff I use almost exclusively for film cameras or a special purpose with the digital

"New"

DA 35
DA 40
FA 50 macro
FA-J 75-300

"Old"
A 16mm fisheye
F 35-70
F 50
Tokina 90mm macro

2 new, 10 old. ( 1 kit lens )

I've only bought one expensive lens, the DA 50-135, the rest are cheap manual focus or F Series.

I had to say 0-24% because, although I have quite a lot of older lenses, I generally have better new ones. And that would include the FA43 and FA77. But I still use my Vivi Series 1 macro regularly.
