Tamron 300mm 1:2.8 60B on a K20D ?

Hello,

I would like to buy a second hand 300mm f2.8lens for my K20D and got a proposal for the above item.

Will the autofocus and aperture control work with this lens or will I loose some features ?

Many thanks for your help.

Tamron 300/2,8 60 B is a manual focus lens. The in-focus confirmation light in the viewfinder does work, but the lens needs to be focused manually.
Automatic aperture control works fine provided you have the later automatic version of Tamron Adaptall K-mount adapters .
I had this lens for quite a while. See the third-party lens review section for further comments.

There are several people here, using the 60B on a K20, including myself. It is a nice lens, still quite small for a 300/2.8, which I find convenient. It can show some noticeable purple fringing in high contrast situations, but is otherwise a very nice lens, with good sharpness and contrast. It works well with the Pentax L tele converters, especially with the Pentax A 1.4x-L, which gives you a 420/4 lens, but also the 2x tc is very useable, making this a very versatile lens.

The 60B needs the rear filter and the front filter. If one of those is missiong, getting a replacement can be time consuming (rear filter) or expensive (front filter).

The amount of features you retain will depend on whether you use the PK mount or PK/A mount. With the later, you retain open aperture metering etc. and only lose AF. This lens doesn't AF. There are also m42 mounts available but would essential function the same as with the PK mount. The PK/A mounts are somewhat pricey unless you are patient.

Don't forget the Pentax AF 1.7x with such a fast lens now that they are more available. Not only does it give you 510mm at ~f/4.5 and AF but it acts as a focus limiter so if you "miss" it only cycles a very small distance and you don't lose sight of the target. I use one on my A*400/2.8 often and it works wonderfully.

Again thanks a lot for this useful information.

As I am obviously dealing with experimented people, could you recommend lenses for such camera with minimum 300mm focal and f4 aperture ?

There are many choices in that range.

Currently available would be:

Pentax DA 300/4
Sigma 100-300/4
Sigma/Tamron 70-200/2.8 + 1.4x tc
Sigma 300/2.8

Secondhand

Pentax A* 300/4
Pentax SMC-K 300/4 (the cheapest, but quite good in many respects)
Pentax A/FA 300/2.8
Pentax A/FA 400/2.8
Pentax FA 600/4
Tamron 400/4

THen there are a few lenses which ly just outside your specs, namely those with a f/4.5 fastest aperture, like the F/FA 300/4.5 or the old SMC-K 500/4.5 or the Sigma AF 500/4.5, all of which are also worth considering.

Ben

There are also some 67 and 645 lenses with these specs, for instance the 800/4 67 lens - but you need a gun pod carriage to use that.
