best place to shop used camera London England

I am in London for three weeks in a business trip. Just wondering if anyone can recommend some nice places for second hand Pentax stuff, primarily lenses.

Cheers.

Jacob's Photographic and Jessops main store in Tottenham Court Road (Jacob's is just opposite Jessops). Also, ther used to be a smaller place in Westminster and loads of others. You'll find addresses here:
Used Cameras from 89 specialist Camera Shops in the UK

There are a couple of recommendable dealers, like SRS, MXV or Robert White, which I have bought of nice equipment, but they all involve a trip by bus or underground, if you find the time. Mr. Cad in Croydon is within easy reach and there is Croydon Photo Center not far off.

Thanks, Ben. I'm lining up a London holiday in May or June. This helps a great deal!

Jessops don't do Pentax, and neither 2nd hand stuff.
Jacobs has nearly no Pentax used stuff but they stock new.
There is London Camera Exchange on Strand, West end cameras and Kingsley photographic in Tottenham court road. If you are after Canikon stuff there is Aperture (don't know the street but it's close to British museum, just google it) and York cameras (they havee some Pentax stuff but do mainly C&N).
Up north in Watford is srsmicrosystems. Very good shop IMHO. And in Camden theree is Nicolas cameras. It's just opposite Mornington crescent tube station. Guy there is "bit" dodgy but very often has unbelievable stock. He's asking stupid prices but if you have "rhino skin" you can walk away with great deal...

that's my input....

Nicolas is plainly too expensive with almost everything. Even when once I found a piece of equipment I really badly wanted, I didn't buy it there, because of the price… It is some time, that I visited Jessops in Tottenham Court Rd. but back then, they had some secondhand Pentax equipment. Jacob's opposite shop had more, though, at reasonable prices. Aperture (at least some years back) had a good selection of fine equipment in good condition - but not on the cheap side. I agree fully about SRS and also would again recommend MXV. A visit to Mr. Cad is also worth it.

Ben, I visit all above mentioned shops on weekly basis to check 2nd hand stuff.
Jessops stopped doing Pentax stuff in January 09 and used stuff around the same time too.
Jacobs' used stuff section seems to be going down hill as they have less and less stuff in general not to mention Pentax (though they had some 645 & 67 lenses last time i paid them visit) and Aperture stopped Pentax too (and yes they aren't cheap).
As much as I agree with your opinion on Nicolas, I still think it's worth the shot. I still regret I didn't buy K85/1.8 when he showed me minty one for 340GBP....
I think I'll pay him visit tomorrow

and MXV and Mr. Cad???
where are those? havn't been to those two yet

Croydon. I was there a few weeks ago and they'd just had a consignment of Pentax lenses in from Israel. Fairly crummy quality in that batch, although I did pick up the macro 50. His comment was that the Pentax stuff had been selling especially well in the last 6 months - their inventory was down from a few 100 Pentax -a and -m to only 50 or so.

SRS Microsystems in Watford has by far the best selection - its a 15min fast train ride from Euston, and a 10 minute walk from the station to the store.

Used Equipment - SRS Microsystems

Chiswick Cameras near Chiswick Park Tube (District Line) have a selection as well, though not as comprehensive there are some interesting lenses and they generally have more in stock than they actually list, so worth a visit (and hey, Chiswick is a nice place too).

Chiswick Camera Centre

No-one else comes close and believe me I know. I live here.

Nicholas Cameras in Camden does a lot of second hand gear but generally old stuff in poor condition (and not cheap). Best avoided.

Most of the main stores in central London either dont do second hand gear at all, or simply do very little Pentax gear. You may occasionally find something at Jacobs (New Oxford St) or London Camera Exchange (The Strand) but there is no guarantee.

Don't even bother walking into Jessops, they will tell you Pentax went out of business and they no longer sell second hand stuff.

So, sorry to report you will have no luck in central London but venture a little further west, or north west, and you should find something of interest.

Have fun

Well, which do you want? The best place or some nice places? After all, if it is the former it would be lamentable were someone to direct you to the second best place by mistake.

Thanks a lot for these updates (though a bit disappointing. But I guess, Jessops had so much trouble business-wise, they just streamlined their business to try to be really profitable and I can understand to a degree, that they would then drop Pentax…

MXV is gone broke in the wake of the economic downturn I just learned. That's sad - I bought my Bigma by them just a year ago (app.), excellent service and prices. The former proprietor has an ebay shop running, but much smaller and ofcourse no shop anymore to visit.

So, that leaves SRS as the best source.

Mr. Cad is in Croydon:
Tel : +44 (0)20 8684 8282 Fax : +44 (0)20 8684 8835 Email: sales@mrcad.co.uk
68 Windmill Road, Croydon, Surrey, CR0 2XP
Open Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 10am-4pm, Closed Sundays and Bank Holidays.
They have currently 124 Pentax K-mount items listed on their website (MrCad) and also have M42 and many other things.

Not far away is the Croydon Photo Center:
CROYDON PHOTO CENTRE
High Street Radio & Photographic
294 High Street Croydon Surrey CR0 1NG
Tel : 020 8688 9015
opening times 10.30am - 5.00pm (closed all day Wednesday & Sunday)
Croydon Photo Centre
Which also currently lists some Pentax items on their website.

So, I think, Corydon is certainly worth a visit, just watch how you get there
