This one caught my eye, but became way too expensive too early.

SMC PENTAX-F AF ADAPTER 1.7X (TELECONVERTER) LENS on eBay For 35mm SLR, Camera Lenses, Photography (item 170132058310, end time 22-Jul-07 18:30:00 BST)

Am no expert, but clearly the PENTAX-F SMC AF ADAPTER was a classic

So, with my wallet still intact (no doubt temporarily), do you guys have experience of any you would recommend?

Guess am being cheap, but thinking a converter would complement my SMC DA 50-200mm.

Yup, it's indeed a classic, but there are sharper (Pentax) and also cheaper (third-party) alternatives out there. The F converter sure is easy to use, but it only works with fast lenses (F2.8 or faster recommended, F4.5 minimum) and it isn't the fastest to focus. Ouch! 100 POUNDS! wow haha. I'd say you are kinda stuck on this one as you have no other choice than AF Teleconvertors.

Remember this though. Even if you do score the F X1.7...your DA50-200mm becomes a 85-340mm with aperture ranging from 6.8 to 9.5. Very limited to daylight ONLY! A high price to pay when you can spend that money instead on buying a decent film era oldie.

Thanks Mo. From the thread the "A 2x-S" or the "T6-2X" look like the best buys, though in the UK I see them priced equally (around £150/$300+). Which would be better suited from the point of less compatibility problems, or the point of superior image quality?
Dilemma (with a background hum from an ailing wallet).

I bought this one on Ebay for about 99.00 and it works fantastic and no quality loss at all.

you need to watch with the 1.7 x AF adaptor as it is limited in terms of maximum apature.

It will work on F4 lenses, but nothing slower even in bright daylight.

Thanx for the recommendations. Now, this is I'm sure, a stupid question with an obvious answer

which I'm sure I know, but that means the lens's max aperture needs to be 4 or better... I am fine stopping it down to increase DOF given enough light?

What I'm sure I don't know the answer to is, but can sqeeze by with the FA* 300 f/4.5 tho in bright direct sunlight? (interested in using it on the savana in Tanzania) Else other then the 300mm f/4.5 in a FA* or just A or M form, I'm considering the the FA* 80-200.... if I can just make up my mind!!! (sorry for jak'n your thread bluespearbone).

Tamron 1.4X teleconverter is not that great. I had 2 of them and both of them degrades the images quality to the degree that I felt no need to have a * lens at all regardless on A*300 f2.8 or Fa* 300 f4.5.

Even when I see people posting images using the combination of tamron 1.4X and Fa 300 f4.5, these examples do not convince me at all.

I would rather stick with AF 1.7X tele or 2X S tele instead. With these two, the image quality are less degraded comparing to 3rd party tele

Argh, there goes the idea of stacking 1.4x and 1.7x on the FA* 80-200....

I feel I really need auto-focus. I'm new to this and haven't had good success with manual focus any time I've tried it with my existing lenses. I don't want to loose shot on this [probably] once in a lifetime trip.

I appreciate it the warning; surprising though as a lot of people really love that TC. I do still feel compelled to get one though (or Sigma), if I really really need the reach out there on the savannah. I guess a degraded subject is better then a unrcecognizably small subject...?

Thank you for the teleconverter link. The newspaper images were revealing. I haven't given my tamron 1.4 tc a good enough go. I got scared off from using it because it was awful with the 50-200, auto focusing was a loud grinding deal and not good for wildlife shooting! I did use it on the tamron 70-300 LI DI that I have and it behaved much better. I should use the combo more often when I don't want to carry the Bigma around!

I shot this today with a tamron 1.4 F AF tc and a kiron 80-200mm f4.5 lens. needless to say, i was very surprised at the result.

This was shot with the Tamron 70 x 300 Di and the Tamron 1.4 teleconverter and she was about 50 yards away and I think it looks perfect.
