Or...the Helios can be sharp. A funny thing about shooting my Helios 44-2 f2 58mm on a film body, I can't just shoot it wide open if the lighting, film speed, and shutter speed range don't allow.
When I bought my Helios, it came with a Zenit-B body. I didn't care that much if the body was any good, because it was a good price for the Helios alone. But the Zenit seemed to work, except for some shutter sticking on the slowest shutter speeds, so I thought why not try it out shooting mainly at 1/500 and 1/250, and a very few times at 1/125 (close to the sticking speeds). I shot some Zenit exposures with the Helios, some with my Sears f2.8 135mm, but then I didn't get around to finishing off the roll until recently. Then I put my new Soviet lens, a Mir 37mm, on the Zenit for those shots. Here's one of the Helios shots, probably shot around f8 or so (I lost my notes for those shots). Pretty darned sharp. As much as I love the Helios wide open, when it's just sharp in the center, it's certainly capable of being sharp across the frame, if you need it to be. Film is Fujicolor 200.
