Whats the Pentax equivalent to the Canon 70-200mm F4L

What about the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 ... Superb lens, cheaper plus a stop faster.

77mms, 43mms, etc and the older AF ones from the early 80s are cool too

I'll have to dissent on the 60-250. The nice thing about the Canon 70-200/4 is that it's *very* sharp wide open and stays almost that sharp when stopping down. The 60-250 isn't that sharp wide open (nor is the Sigma 70-200/2.8) and needs to be stopped down for max sharpness. It's also quite a bit heavier than the 70-200/4 (the Sigma 70-200 is even heavier than the 60-250...I had it for a little while).
The 70-200/4 is one of Canon's best lenses. The 60-250 is one of Pentax's but for different reasons (more range, weathersealing)...

I was talking to my wife, and she doesnt mind if I keep the 70-200 L, as she put it:

" you'll just whine about selling it later"

so I may end up with the EOS and a K-X

hmm...the MTF numbers seem to show they're both about the same (stopping down helps):
Pentax SMC DA* 60-250mm f/4 ED [IF] SDM - Review / Test Report - Analysis

I'm going to have to do more testing of my 60-250 wide open...maybe I have a defective copy

The non IS Canon lens is a 3rd of the price of that 60-250 and even the new IS version is hugely cheaper.

In fact you can pick up a 2nd hand non IS for next to nothing these days.

Why change to a diff brand body? The 550D/TI2 will do the job just as well & you won't need to splurge on overpriced Pentax "pro" glass.

I'm not sure about prices outside the US, but here the price of the 70-200/4 IS is the same price as the 60-250 ($1210 vs $1199 USD at BHphoto) and the non-IS version is a little over half the price of the 60-250 ($639 vs $1199).

EDIT: FWIW, I do overall agree the 60-250 seems a bit expensive in comparison to the 70-200/4.

I think the problem here is that you are comparing the DA*60-250 on APS C with the 70-200 f4L IS on FF with the links provided.

If you go to this link you will see the test on APS C for the Canon to make things more equal:
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L - Review / Test Report - Analysis

You will see that the DA*60-250 is more than a match for the 70-200 f4 L even allowing for the Mp difference of the testing cameras. Even the 70-200 f4 L IS is about the same as the DA*60-250 f4.

The fact is, most of these high quality zooms in this range are all bloody good when you are spending this much money.

According to B&H, the 70-200 f4 L is US$640 and the DA*60-250 f4 is US$820, so a far cry away from a "3rd of the price" as you state. But the fact is, you cannot compare a non IS lens to the DA*60-250 f4 because the 60-250 is SR when attached to a Pentax K-x.

Dylan, I don't understand why you always bring up Pentax's (overpriced) South African prices into other threads. It just isn't applicable. I wouldn't shoot Pentax in South Africa either (or at least I'd figure out a way to get it from somewhere else), but that doesn't mean that prices are that bad in North America -- they are much more equivalent here. Just check out B and H, Adorama or Amazon if you don't believe me.

I am awaiting my K-X eagerly and I was looking at lenses, but I am still a bit unfamiliar with the Pentax nomenclature

is the FA 77 limited basically the same class as the Canon L series primes?

More or less, yes. Either "Limited" or "*" are used to indicate the higher quality lenses.
