Please, Pentax, release a fast 30mm pancake

If Samsung can do it....

Otherwise just license from them?

A compact 30mm on a K-x would stop me wanting a Micro 4/3!

If they could make a 30mm version of the 40mm Ltd it would go on one of my K20D bodies the day I got it and back end of that lens would never see daylight again.

Totally different registration differences. It would require a different optical design. Might well not be possible to get it that small and that fast.

It's really easy for Samsung, Panasonic, and Olympus to make such small pancakes because of their mirrorless designs, allowing them to create much smaller lenses. Unfortunately Pentax hasn't gone that route yet, but what's wrong with the DA 40mm f/2.8? I think that's an incredibly thin lens and it's pretty fast too. Maybe not f/1.7 fast, but it's still fast for how big it is.

What do you mean by, "unfortunately Pentax hasn't gone mirrorless, yet?" There are advantages to the SLR design even in the digital world. I guess the thing about the 40mm ltd is that the 43mm ltd is f1.9 and there is also the 31mm ltd . . .

Edit: The Samsun 30mm/system gives up the possibility of IS. Plus, who actually makes the glass for Samsung?

I guess I accidentally added the word unfortunately in there, or I meant to those who would have wanted that lens. Either way though, personally I don't want Pentax to go mirrorless, unless they make some kind of rangefinder style camera, because mirrorless DSLR style cameras just don't really make that much sense to me. Yeah, the 30mm doesn't have any kind of built in IS, and Panasonic is one of those companies that makes lens based IS, which definitely doesn't help them.

I, too, would not want Pentax to go mirrorless.
But to have the 30mm lens, like the Samsung 30mm pancake lens , would be awesome.
If Pentax have that, my wish list on prime lens would be 12mm, 30mm, 50mm, 70mm and finally 135mm.

Cheers.

For a start its 40mm not 30mm... ;-)

I am actually just amazed that they pumped the 35/2 as there is no cheap(ish) 30 odd mm lens in the lineup.. They need something like the Nikon 35/1.8, they could just bring the 35/2 back, they were US$299 new, bit more expensive now they discontinued them (if you find one)..

I find it amazing that they haven't made a fast standard yet. It's only been 6 1/2 years.
The DA 35/2.8 is turning out to be a very nice lens, but it is slow, and the 40, as good as it is, is on the long side.
The 31 is excellent, and is my favourite lens, but it is far larger than it needs to be for what it is doing.
The FA35/2 is a very good lens, but it's plastic build is not nice compared to the DA lenses.

Lots of good comments here. Hope Pentax is listening :-)

Not having a fast normal is pretty inexcusable (am not counting the FA 31 as it's too expensive... besides, I already bought and lost one).

Pentax would not only make a dumb situation right, but by releasing a reasonably-priced pancake fast normal, they'd leapfrog the competition.
