This looks like one lens i can use.

F1.4 up to crop sensor 128mm and with x2 tele i get a 256mm range. It definitely will cut down the lenses i need to bring.

do you guys things it will be worth the cash?
This is one of the most interesting lenses in the last year. However, I just found a M85/2 which is a great lens, especially for the money.

If the Sigma performs well and if manual focus starts annoying me, I might get one someday. Until then - no need to purchase

I too own the M 85mm, and it is my favorite lens I own by far. Despite this, my plan has always been an AF and MF lens in each focal length I enjoy (85mm being my favorite on APSC). MF for fun, AF for more serious work.

Im sure they will make great companions

judging by the way how the Sigma 50/1.4 and Sigma 70/2.8 which are two of the most pleasing and outstanding Sigma lenses, are being priced in the market, the Sigma 85 shouldn't go past $800. to be more specific, I would assume Sigma to price it at around $720-$750. just hope that my prophecy is dead on.
If people are deciding between a Sigma 85mm f1.4 EX DG AF and Pentax FA 77mm ltd f1.8 ~$750, which one do you think will win?

IMO, I would say the Sigma. why? because it is a new lens and people are more interested in trying out new stuff compared to what had been out of the market for a few years. the f1.4 aperture opening or half-stop advantage sounds much more tempting. having tried both 77mm and 85mm focal length, I would prefer the image projected by the 85mm. and lastly, well it's an HSM lens.

although there is two advantage that the 77mm have over the 85mm, and that is "size" and "weight". for people who wanted a lighter combo, this would surely be their preference.

anyway, this would only be possible if the 85mm is better than the FA77 in IQ.

That's exactly what i was thinking.
I would not even thake into consideration the sigma if it's price is so close to the FA limited unless it is clearly a superior lens.

Im completely different. pending results, IMHO the FA has nothing to offer that would make me want it more than the sigma other than the Pentax badge.

I sold off my FA*85 and A*85 but keep the FA77 after some comparison. Don't think the Sigma 85/1.4 can be much better than A*/FA*85.

we don't know that for certain yet. although there is one thing that the Pentax 85s dont have, it's called the HSM.

The Sigma doesn't have the screwdrive feature which makes it a mf lens in non-SDM Pentax bodies which means it is a no-go on my MZ-3. Hell, it won't work on some K10d bodies if they have the early firmware version on them.

Okay, pinging this thread because, like a little kid, I can't wait for news on the availability, pricing, and performance of this lens. Anybody have the latest scoop on this yet?

they said June. pricing is still a lil bit sketchy. although initial reports said the price is $1300 (ouch), this is as far as the Canadian price is concerned. if the reports are accurate, my purchase might have to wait til the end of the year.

Just in case nobody has posted this before:

There's a price of 1099 EUR mentioned on the German Sigma website. Weight is still tbd.
