DA* 16-50mm Problem

Hi,

I have a K20D with a 16-50 lens. Since yesterday the camera will not auto-focus. I only have this lens so I can't try another one to see if it's the camera or the lens.

When the lens is not mounted to the camera, should moving the AF switch on the lens make the focusing ring more rigid or does it stay the same? Someone told me it could be the clutch?

Are there any tests I can run on the lens or camera to check where the problem lies?

Thanks in advance.

You guys are scaring the hell out of me.

I've had the DA* 16~50 for a week now. So far so good.

I have owned my DA* 16-50 since November, 2007. It has worked perfectly. Somewhere I did a "census" of my lens usage, and it was 44% of my total images with the K10d. A certain number of the lenses are faulty. A much larger number are not. Try cleaning the contacts first, and if you have no luck, send it back to be fixed while it is still under warranty.

The AF/MF switch is electrical, not physical on the DA* lenses. The position of the switch should make absolutely no difference in the manual focus feel, unless you are holding the shutter or AF button down.

Get a K100D or earlier one (*istD/Ds ...) and your lens' AF will work again

I've had the DA* 16~50 for a few weeks now. I don't do a lot of shooting below 200mm so this lens is quite a diversion for me. I coach many things including the high school chess team. We had our championship tournament a few weeks ago at the local city hall. We played in the rotunda/foyer and this gave me a chance to experiment with the new optic at 16mm.

That's not severe barrel distortion - the room is round. I think I'm going to like this lens.

Cheers

It's a great indoor lens, isn't it? Tom, this has got to stop. You have my M 400, you have my DA* 16-50 - where are you going to stop?

If you own one Albert I take it as a recommendation to buy. That DA* 50~135/2.8 of yours is looking pretty sweet.

Yes, even if the AF goes South again, the DA*50-135 will make a superb manual focus mid range telephoto zoom. And with the 1.7X, I can always use it as an 85-230 with touch up AF. Happy camper.
