Pentax FA 100-300mm F4.7-5.8

Anyone have any experience with this lens? If so, how does it do at the long end? Thanks in advance for any comments.

Nick

Thanks, Nathan for the reply and the examples. I'm looking for something a little longer than my 50-200, but don't have a lot to spend.

I haven't seen too much good about the 100-300.

It seems like all of the lenses that cover 100-300 (whether they are a 100-300 or a 70-300) get mixed reviews. Overall most people seem happiest with the Tamron 70-300 Di LD Macro though. I have had the Quantaray-branded version of it for about a week and am happy with it so far. At some point I need to put up some example shots.

The biggest problem people have with the Tamron is purple fringing in certain high-contrast situations. I've seen some slight PF in some of my shots, one other person posted a rather extreme example, but many of my pictures have no sign of purple fringing at all.

Nearly every Tamron purple fringing example I've seen so far (including mine) has involved birds shot with a water background in bright sunlight for some reason.

this is a comparisons between my Pentax smc FA 80-200 (my 100-300 is kurput) this lens is built the same as the 100-300 i have it for about a year and my 50 F1.7 i had for years and came with my K1000 i think it was made in the 70s you can see the difference in where the 50 is holding up much better and it has been threw more i got the 80-200 in perfitct condition. one of the reasons i am for metal lens and bodes.

It's no limited lens, however it isn't priced like one. A few more photos from this lens can be seen at http://www.pbase.com/nnmo/fa_100_300_f4_7_5_8

Thanks Entropy, Nathan and Nate
Info and comments were helpful and the photos especially so. I have been trying to decide on this lens or the Pentax FAJ 75-300mm F4.5-5.8

For me it is OK, even at 300mm.
