Lens Hoods for M lenses?

Did Pentax make lens hoods for the M lenses? Did the primes come with a hood when originally purchased when new? How come you never see hoods for these lenses?

Yep Pentax made them and they would have been included with the telephoto primes or as an option with the wides and standards. They are available on eBay, just make sure they are the right filter diameter for your lens, for the M series that would usually be 49mm. The lenses that the hood is meant for will be listed on the front of the hood and the filter size on the back.

Phil.

PS I did an artical on the K series lens hood, you can check it out it will give you an idea as what you are looking for.

It sure did. I have several.

Some did but most of them didn't.

I don't know.

I don't use the "dedicated" lens hoods for M lenses because they are not optimal (too wide) when the lens is used with DSLRs with APS-C sensors. Also, the metal hoods, while cool-looking, take up space in the bag.

I use different kind of hoods:

Phil, Thanks for the link to the photo's of lens hoods. So were the Pentax K hoods the same hoods used for the M lenses?

No the M series had its own set of lens hoods. They had a smaller filer diameter than the K series hoods. Look for hoods that say "49mm" and are clip-on plastic.

Wow -- what kind of hoods are those?

And I'll ask the obvious -- no vignetting, right?

I use this kind of hoods on all of my primes. They offer good protection for the lenses and hardly take up any space.

The inspiration comes from the hood of the DA 40mm Ltd.

Each "hood" is one or two step-down adapter rings.

My DA21 and DA70 gets a 49-37mm plus a 37mm-30.5mm, mainly to use the same lens caps as the DA40 (30.5mm).

The FA50 and F28 each get a 49-28mm.

The Sigma 50mm macro and the Tamron 90mm macro each gets a 55-30.5mm.

My Vivitar 135mm close-focusing gets a 62-49mm adapter ring, followed by a Pentax 49mm metal hood.

Nope. I test each lens at all apertures, and at various focusing distances.

This kind of hoods doesn't work with zoom lenses, vignetting always happens at the widest end.

I was searching for a hood for my F28/2.8 and came across this thread.
I thought it deserved a bump.
Has anyone else used step down rings for hoods?

what I find is that regardless of series of lens, the hoods are not optimum, i.e. the maximum length possible without vignetting

Some of this is simply to limit the number of different hoods to be made and some of it is to acknowledge that filters and hoods may be used at the same time.

the problem is that going to the cropped sensor, the "correct hood" is not any where near good enough, and should be made longer.

For example on my 50mm I use the hood from the 105, on my 85mm I use the hood that was common for 135 and 200mm taks, etc....

I have a spreadsheet called hoodcalc, that was also uploaded onto the forum, that can be used to calculate the correct hood length given the sensor size, hood diameter, and front element diameter (not filter)

note that this considers, in the total length, that the front element is not recessed, therefore you need to consider the resess of the lens back from the filter threads to push it right to the limit

I've just been using the cheap 3-way rubber collapsible hoods on my M and K lenses. They don't look very cool, but allow some adjustment, and seem to work fine.

I don't look cool? Oh well. I'll keep using the rubber hoods on my M and K lenses; I like that they're collapsible and that they provide a bit of protection. I do have serious flare problems with my K24 so I need to get a longer hood for it.

I picked up two M series lens hoods on EBAY over the last few years. I got one for the M 50/1.4 and M 35/2. They tend to be rare and as a result expensive but they look pretty cool. In addition, as they are designed for the lens in question, they do a great job of reducing flare.

I described the 50mm hood in the accessory section below.
