FA43 at F4 is a good answer. My FA77 as well, but I cannot tell you exactly where. But maybe the Vivitar Series 1 105mm macro beats them all. I don't know for sure as I would have to rather obsessively compare.

sharpest would probably be the Sigma 70.

but some of my lenses are really sharp or sharpest at their respective focal lengths and aperture openings.

DA12-24/4 = sweet spot f5.6 best at 18mm

K28/3.5 = sweet spot f5.6

FA35/2 = sharpest 35 at f2. sweetspot at f4

FA50/1.7 = sharpest 50mm at f1.7

Sigma 70 = sharpest macro at 70mm f2.8. sweetspot f5.6.

FA100 = sharp macro at 100mm. sweetspot f5.6

FA135 = sharpest 135mm. very sharp at f2.8. sweetspot at f4 and f5.6.

Pentax FA 31mm Limited closely followed by the DA* 55mm F1.4.

Well, don't really know. The K135/2.5 is "split-hairtops-countingly" sharp at about f/4-8.

Both the K35/3.5 and the K28/3.5 are very sharp for the most part also.

I'm just waiting for someone that owns an A*85 to post... What I have seen from it, very few things come close...

You want sharp?

Totally completely sharp... scary sharp, even at 100% image?

You're going to laugh:

I've got a 35mm 2.8 SMC M series lens that is the sharpest thing I've ever, ever used. I was going to sell it after buying a DA 35mm macro, but after some comparisons I found that the old M series lens was overwhelmingly sharp and better looking than the DA at similar stops! I am NOT letting a lens that sharp get away!

Regards,

Germar

All three about equal:
  • Pentax-FA 77/1.8 Limited
  • Pentax-FA 35/2
  • KMZ Helios 44M 58/2
Not far behind:
  • Sigma 50/2.8 EX DG Macro
  • Pentax-K 55/1.8

Tamron 90 SP f2.8

D-FA Macro 50/2.8. However, after that, it is a close call between that and the FA 35/2, DA40, DA70 and M 50 1.4 (at F4-8). Actually, almost any of these lenses is so sharp as to be indistinguishable on APS-c in practical use.

Really, Steve? I love my Heliosen, but I can't imagine ever putting them among the sharpest I own.

FA43, followed by FA77 and FA31. I'm not really into macro, so I can't compare the FA Ltd against a dedicated macro lens.

M 50mm 1.7 (but I only own that, the 18-55 kit and a tamron 70-300mm), it will be the DA40 when I actually buy it.

I'll say:

D FA 100mm macro
FA 35mm 2.0
FA 50mm 1.4
DA 40mm Ltd (I don't have this lens yet it's on its way, but going by test reports)
Image (Cosina) A 28mm 2.8
16-45mm

Bunch of zooms.
