Sears 1:1.7 50mm - no MC on lens - is it worth$15

I was hoping to have some input on the Sears 50mm 1:1.7 lens. The text is different than the one in the review section...it says Auto Sears 1:1.7f=50mm 10396?(I didn't take the best cell pic of it ) Lens Made In Japan. Is this lens worth $15? I found one at a local flea market but haven't purchased it yet. I would be using it on my new K-x.

Thanks in advance for any and all input!

I'm pretty sure there was only one of those lenses made, and for $15 it's definitely worth it! Look at the photos of it in the various marketplace threads, does it look like those ones?

I had one of these once before. If you want to use it as a fancy paperweight, and feel the need to pay $15 for one, then by all means. It will do the job of collecting light and focusing it on the sensor. The copy I had was quite soft, even stopped down. I didn't use it much because I didn't like it and was happy to see it go when I sold the Sears KSX I put it on (to sell). Do yourself a favor (IMO) save your pennies for a little while longer and get a Pentax-M50 f1.7.

The problem with Sears is, the lens could have been made by anyone. I've had two Sears lenses with the same part number be different lengths side-by-side. The only sure way to tell is to buy it and test it yourself. It's not a big gamble at $15. Follow Jeff's advice if you want a known excellent lens: more money maybe, but a great value.

You did not specify whether this is a K-mount or M42 screw mount lens. If it is M42, it is probably rebranded Ricoh Rikenon (Tomioka made) and may well be worth checking out. If it is K-mount, its origins are less certain. Be aware that some K-mount Sears lenses are actually Ricoh-P mount and have the infamous "Ricoh pin" that can bind with the AF drive on Pentax cameras making removal difficult.

Steve

(Owns the M42 Auto-Rikenon 50/1.7...very enjoyable and well-built lens)

(BTW...Welcome to the forum!)

Thank you for all of the input and info. I am still learning about lenses and what to look for etc so these responses are quite helpful to me. You've all given me some things to think about before jumping in. =)

@jct us101 - Every search I've done here and elsewhere, none have looked exactly like the one I found at the flea market! Though it seems that Just1MoreDave has the answer to that problem...likely a different maker.

@JeffJS Thank you for your input! I will start looking into the Pentax M 50mm 1.7.

@Stevebrot - I didn't specify because at the time I didn't know to look for that. I'll have to go back and look at it more. I need to do that anyway now that I have been reading up on what to look for to make sure it is in good condition (only did some of the things I've seen recommended). Oh and thanks for the welcome! =)

I haven't had an opportunity to go back yet...hopefully tomorrow. It seems several of you have a good opinion of the M42 mount version of it so if that is what it is, I'll likely give it a try. =) (Sorry Jeff!) Then I'll need to get my hands on the M42 adapter. =)

Thanks for the input Igilligan and Yoshizuki.

ETA-
@Jeff - The $369 lens looks more like the lens I am considering. Just the number is different. Maybe it is a M42 mount lens then. Can't wait to find out. I do have an early bid in on a Pentax M 1.7 50mm though just in case. =)

I'll second this. I found my M50/1.7 in mint condition in the used counter at my local camera store for just $34. It's a wonderful lens.

Hate to bump an old thread, but I just want to echo the gloriousity of this lens. Mine is a K-mount and appears to be coated however, so that could make a difference. For the $20 or so I paid for it, I can't complain at all. My advice for anyone seeing one of these is to perhaps check for multicoating if possible, its probably from a seperate run. My lens also is stamped "Made in Japan", which may be a clue - I suspect mine is a rebranded Pentax-M.

Yes, gloriousity is a word, I just made it up!

Oh, and a shot of my particular lens so you can ID it if you see it in a pawn shop or yard sale somewhere...

I have a Sears TLS camera and it came with a lens that says: Auto Sears 1:1.7 50mm Lens 110416 Made In Japan.

The camera is based (from what I read) is based off the Ricoh Singlex TLS camera, and uses M42 mount lenses.
