The problem is, they are simple lenses with poor sharpness and lots of CA. The Raynoxes have achromatic lens elements for improved optics. There's quite a difference in quality. Have you looked at the Raynox club thread? https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/74221-raynox-macro-club.html
Hi Laurie,

To be a little more specific, achromatic diopters have multiple lens elements which allow for more uniform performance over the entire frame (flatter field of focus, with considerably better edge IQ). They are superior in every way over the single element diopters, and their prices reflect this. There used to be a number of choices for achromatic close ups, but most are now discontinued. The Raynox models mentioned are the most easily available, but some of the Canon close ups (mostly the larger sizes) can still be found.

Here's an old site that shows what used to be available (and might occasionally still be on the used market) There's also some good information on calculating magnification and use of these diopters.

Currently Available 2 Element (Achromatic) Close-up Lenses

Ok thanks for the information.
you may also want to consider the Marumi Achromat. they seem to have great IQ as well. I think you will need a +5 level Marumi.

That Marumi would be equivalent to a Raynox 150 (+4.8). The 250 is a +8 diopter.

I thought that would be +3 for the Raynox 150 equivalent. anyways, I would like to see some photos from such diopter. any chance that somebody here owns one?

First photo with the Raynox

I'm very satisfied with the result. Thanks for those who helped finding the right close up filter. Here is the result:

Hi:

I love the Tamron 90mm as is. Here is a small crop--the butterfly was a little larger than a quarter.

Decent picture but your editing is rough. It appears that you attempted to white out the shadows a bit with a PS brush but did it in a very spotty manner. Try putting your head lower than the LCD monitor to see it better.

I too have a Tamron 90mm macro lens that use on my K-5. I want to get even more magnification but I find bellows and extension tubes to be too cumbersome. I do have a Tamron 1.4X teleconverter I use with a lot of success with my DA* 60-250mm telephoto lens. Does anyone know if the optical quality of the 1.4X teleconverter is better or worse than the Raynox close-up lenses for macro work?

Tamron A9FB close-up adapter for 28-200mm

Tamron once made a A9FB close-up adapter for 28-200mm lens. (2-1m) . not sure if it would fit the 90mm though.
It has a 72mm bayonet (not a 72mm filter thread...)
