Cheap lens

OK, I've had my K-x for a couple of weeks now and I think I'm in the early stages of LBA. Thank goodness my wallet is helping me resist so far. I shoot mainly family and event pictures with perhaps an airshow in the summer. I've been looking at this 70-200/4-5.6 TAKUMAR-F IN PENTAX K/KA AF MOUNT on ebay and I was wondering if this lens is decent enough to fool around with until I can afford better. I've read some of the opinions around here and I know it not the latest and greatest, but since I'm just learing, will this be sufficient?

Thanks for the opinions.

Don't know the price on that one, but the current 55-300 is excellent. It will give a bit more reach for the airshows, and is a little wider, too.

Avoid any and all K-Mount Takumars. They are not SMC coated. Try to find a Pentax F 70-210 or FA 100 4.5-5.6 or FA 100-300 4.7-5.8. The 4.7-5.8 is a better lens than the 4.5-5.6. The Phoenix/Vivitar/Cosina/Promaster 100-400 4.5-6.7 isn't too bad for the price. You can find them for around $80. Color reproduction / contrast is not that great but can be fixed in post-processing.

For taking shots during an airshow, maybe a 300mm or 5oomm lens will sufice. Also it is longer than the 70-200mm and gives more reachfor taking pictures during the airshow.

Thanks for the replies. The Takumar is selling for $45US, so I guess I can see why. I'll start looking around for the other lenses you suggested.

The Sigma and Tamron zooms in the 70-300 range are cheap. Like $90 or so. They are also relatively slow, going to f5.6 or worse, and they are not top performers.

But if I was looking for some range until I could afford better, I'd look to these lenses.

They'll also do macro, which can be fun.

I had that lens for a few days, it has some awesome bokeh, but the one complaint about it that I had although the optics were quite good is that it is far too heavy. I had it on the K10D and it still lugged even that camera down, it was so amazingly heavy that I really was totally suprised the first time that I picked it up. The lens itself is fairly cheap though, I just saw one on the marketplace for like $25 so if you can get it for that price and don't mind the weight from it then go for it.

Of the two, is the Sigma better than the Tamron?

Most say the Tamron is sharper, but the Sigma has less purple fringing.

Being cheap can be expensive. You are bound to find a better cheap lens than your current one, there seems to be endless pursuit of better cheap lens. And I end up having at one point 5 similar lens of the similar focal range in 70 to 200mm. The are cheap in the $40 to $80 but when you add them all up, you can buy the most expensive one as in the DA 55-300mm. I can't wise up myself as bad habits die hard but I like to share the agony in going the cheap route with you.

I don't know why I didn't recommend this earlier, but the DA 50-200mm can be found relatively cheap and it is actually pretty decent too.

The DA 50-200 seems to be one of the most hated lenses by everyone who has a Pentax, and I really don't get why. I had one, and I took some really cool photos with the lens. It's nice and light and really easy to carry around and it has a very nice reach, especially for nature photos too.

No, I wouldn't say the 50-200 is universally hated. It has its detractors, sure, but lots of people (myself included) love it. If you want an (almost) universally hated Pentax telephoto, see the FA-J 75-300.

But if you're looking for value for money, you simply can't go past the 55-300 as mentioned earlier.
I'll mention it again because it is significantly better than the already good 50-200, and is not too much more expensive as well.

It is worth every cent you pay for it - it may even stay in your kit permanently; it's that good.
