But everytime an FA* 300mm lens goes on sale I drool. And I fantasize.
Believe me, the FA* 300 (or even better, the F* 300) is the best lens in its category. Save money and buy it, it should cure your BLL (Big Lens Lust) for a while. Add a Pentax AF 1.7x adapter, and you'll also get a very nice and compact 510mm F/8 autofocus lens.

I have approximately zero use for a super-telephoto lens.
I have zero use for a 600mm lens.
I still have one.
And I do use it from time to time.
LBA is something to give in to.
Pity your wallet.

The thing with a good 300mm lens is to go out and try to get an image of a red-eyed or white-eyed vireo with it and report back to me and post some images. Its doable with the DA*300mm and predecessors, but you have to be in the right place and the birds come to you. Make no mistake, long glass is specialty glass and requires effort.

Interesting perspective, Blue. I never thought of it that way.

I've been going to MotoGP at Laguna Seca every year for the last 4-5 years. I used to bring my camera and try to get photos. The last time I went with a point and shoot and shot about 5 photos. The professionals do a much better job, they have much better locations, and I enjoy the racing more when I'm not trying to capture it.

Other than MotoGP, I don't really need long glass.

I thought we were talking about big (i.e. long) lenses here.

I used to think 300mm was long till I got a 400mm. Now, 600mm looks like the ideal telephoto to me.

Have the 55-300 but wanted more. Got a cheap-but-fun 500/6.3 mirror that is a bit difficult to manually focus...(I probably should take off my sunglasses :-)

The Sigma 150-500 or 170-500 are undergoing expensive changes, so my near-term search for a long AF lens continues...

Meanwhile, I've found an 800mm f8 bazooka that measures only about 3 feet long....I will no doubt get it (maybe tomorrow). I'll probably just store it in the trunk of my car...

I have the A*300/2.8 which I bought awhile ago, and happened to bring it with me to the zoo yesterday for the day on a monopod with a $5 front filter.... first time I've used it (bought it a month or two ago)

Aside from my cursing for the later part of the day, I regreted bringing along the metal case.... though my gf was a good beast of burden, if maybe she grumbled a little.

...I found a lot of the time, it was too long....

I'm thinking a 200mm would have been better.

and the image stabilization on the k10d wouldn't work properly (yes I do know how to use it )

Damn the lense... but i love you
