My dream list

Here is mine; I'm lucky enough to own most of these lenses (apart some that does not exist yet)
DA*10-16 (expected)
DA 15 f4 limited
DA 21 f3.2 limited
FA 31 f1.8 limited
FA 43 f1.9 limited
A 50 f1.2
DA 70 f2.4limited
FA* 85 f1.4
DA*200 f2.8
DA*300 f4
DA*400f4 (expected)
FA* 600f4

Several of them (the FA43, A 50 and FA 600) bought second hand on ebay so I guess I'm in a 10 000 euros budget

I do wonder how much some of these would cost. The FA* 200mm for example, is quoted with values all over the place.
I think it's around USD1.1k for a mint copy on eBay.

In case it was unclear, I am referring to the famous 200mm macro lens. Surely that goes for more than $1100?

Oh that would be a different story then. 2k maybe to those who wanted it so badly? The current FA* prices make no sense anyway.

yes. it should be around 2k atleast. at $1,600, I think someone would buy it immediately.

Wow, just got home from class, did not expect so many awesome lists from everyone. I'm definitely going to take some of the most popular picks and make a draft/poll and see what the consensus is for the best collection possible for $10k.

The prices for the Leicas are obscene.... There's no way I'd include them in my list if $10k is all I'll ever get to spend on lenses for the rest of my life.

I'd and will buy this again:

Impressive collection. I'd to know the names of the 3 lenses closest to the Pentax K-7... I'm guessing one is the FA 50mm f1.4 and the other is an M85mm f2...

Zeiss 21mm f2.8 T* Distagon $1500
Pentax 31mm FA limited $1200
Pentax 43mm FA limited $1000
Pentax 77mm FA limited $1200

Leica 28mm 2.8 Elmarit $1800
Leica 50mm 1.4 Summilux $2900
Voigtlander 21mm 4 $300

Finally, I see some Leicas and Voigtlanders.

Indeed, this is one of the Most Significant Questions of our time, and it deserves our full attention and devotion.

There is likely no greater purpose to which I should dedicate my mental energies, than to contemplate the material luxuries missing from my meager lifestyle.

I know your time is exceedingly valuable. Nonetheless I seek your leave to note that I, and I suspect many others here, already spend PLENTY of time thinking about the lenses we would like to have but can't afford, thus making it possible to generate a list in about ten seconds.

Clever is your middle name. I think you misunderstood what I was getting at.

Thanks. Somehow, I thought this pic tend e a bit too flaunting at times but nevertheless, it's still my proud collection.

And the lenses are actually FA50f1.4 (you got that correct!), the M28 f3.5 and M135 f3.5 - cheap old manuals actually. Ha. I really love my latest acquirement - the A50 f1.2 though.

Well if you're going to be using a lens for the rest of your life, it may as well be the absolute best.

I agree. I wanted them as well for my list but at the same time I felt that they would cripple the rest of my collection. For the price of one 50mm Leica, you can outfit yourself with several Pentax-A/M primes from 15mm to 150mm probably and they're not too bad either. Leicas are just cost prohibitive, even for a 10k budget.

Then again I'd rather have a fast 50 than a kit lens and that's the same principle.

Might be better to spend a little less on stuff and more on getting the best experience out of life. If you've got the money to do both, can you adopt me?

Thank you
Russell

that's the only bad thing about leica. seems like it's the rolls-royce version of cameras and lenses.

Actually, my middle name is "Caffeine." So says my two-year-old son. (That word is what I say to him when I tell him he can't share my cola, so I guess he inferred that was my name.)

Anyway, I DO get the idea, and I'll stand by my list from before -- which is pretty similar to your starting list because you listed some darn good lenses! I was just teasing a little bit about the seriousness of this exercise.

Carry on!

fwiw, I believe most if not all people here would prefer squeezing in all the best lenses in all focal lengths, including prime specialty lenses and zooms they could muster with their limited budget.

You hypocrite, depriving your offspring of the pleasures that you so freely partake in.

You do get the idea of the thread. I have no problems with people's lists, even if it were short and to the point. This is a game and it's meant to be fun first and foremost, with a little bit of learning/sharing involved as well. We do have a few mental stragglers though, who think they're given $10k to spend on a single lens to add to their current collection. I do a poor job of suffering fools.

I think that's unique to Pentax only, with its lineup of amazing primes and MF lenses. I feel as if primes had hit their peak 20 years ago while zooms have finally got to a point where they're starting to rival primes. I'm all for image quality over convenience, any serious photographer should as well.

I'm getting my first Voigtlander lens soon, trying to start up my Voitlander/Leica/Carl Zeiss collection. I need to work harder so I can afford the FA LTDs and Leicas. My friends are trying to start an intervention, screw them.

I seen the FA* 300 2.8 mentioned a few times with prices of $1500 -$2500. Tell me where please!

My short list would be A* 200/4 macro
A* 85/1.4
FA* 300/2.8 or the rumored DA* 400/4
and everytime I see the smc Special 50mm F1:1.2 silver I get goose bumps
