Hah, yeah, this isn't supposed to be easy. I actually want people to really put some consideration and thought into this. If you're churning out a halfassed list of lenses in 10 seconds then I really don't care for what you have to say. Pretend that these are the last lenses you'll ever use for the rest of your life, if that were the case, I think people would put a LOT more thought into this list.

The way I look at it, the FA* 200mm f4 and FA* 600mm f4 are out of reach for me. Therefore, I'd go with those and add some ltd series lens 1 at a time later.

The rule is, once you've used up the 10k, that's it. You will never get to use another lens. So you can't add on anything later. I think I might add on a 300mm just in case I ever take an interest in sports or birding but it's quite cost prohibitive when you work with only 10k.

My scenario is more realistic from an insurance pay-off.

Lets see, lenses to last the rest of my life.

- K/A15/3.5 = $800
- SigmaEX16/2.8FE = $350
- A20/2.8 = $500
- K28/2 = $700
- K35/3.5 = $40
- FA43/1.9 = $800
- K/A50/1.2 = $400
- A50/2.8 = $250
- A*85/1.4 = $1000
- Kiron105/2.8 = $300
- A*135/1.8 = $2500
- Voigtlander180/4 = $500
- A*300/4 = $600
--------------------------------------------
Total = $8190

With this kit I would be very happy for a very long time. This totals some 8190 dollars, but I cannot think of anything more I'd need. Maybe change the 300mm to the 2.8 version if I could find one for about $2500.

I'm not sure about pricing, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't spend 10 grands, so I'll give you my list and be done... (* are those I do own)

-WR kit (yes! it's compact and thus perfect for hiking)*
-DFA 100 mm macro WR
-Pentax 16-50 mm
-Sigma 17-70 (love this one)*
-Pentax F (or FA) 50 mm f1,7*
-Pentax DA 55-300mm (the FA 100-300 f4,7 which I own would do)
-Pentax 50-135 mm
-Pentax 60-250 mm
-Pentax DA 21 mm LTD*
-Pentax FA 43 mm LTD
-Pentax FA 77 mm LTD
-Pentax M 150 mm f3.5* (so fun to use!)
-Vivitar series 1 70-210 v3 (or v1, that would do)

I'd complete the list with long Pentax tele primes. And count myself happy.

As you see, I actually own quite a few of those. So I'm not that far from my dream kit.

And I'm happy

I do wonder how much some of these would cost. The FA* 200mm for example, is quoted with values all over the place. I guess they don't come up for sale often enough for anyone to really know. That's why I went for the A* model, to save some money and maybe get a lens just as good or better. But hey, it would probably cost a lot more than I estimated! Anyone have one for sale?

I'd buy exactly what I now have, but would avoid the purchases I made along the way (one's I bought then sold) to get to where I am.

Indeed, this is one of the Most Significant Questions of our time, and it deserves our full attention and devotion.

There is likely no greater purpose to which I should dedicate my mental energies, than to contemplate the material luxuries missing from my meager lifestyle.

I know your time is exceedingly valuable. Nonetheless I seek your leave to note that I, and I suspect many others here, already spend PLENTY of time thinking about the lenses we would like to have but can't afford, thus making it possible to generate a list in about ten seconds.
