Pentax 12-24mm- what do you think?

Pentax 12-24 mm- opinions ?
I'm considering a Pentax 12-24 mm lens . What is your opinion of this lens ?

I currently have a 16-45 and a 10-17 Fisheye, both Pentax manufacture.

Is the 12-24 :

* pin point sharp...I consider my 16-45 and 50 F1.4 to be excellent in this category. Is the 12-24 at their level or better in your view ?
* Colour rendition- how would you rate ?
* build quality- plastic or metal ? Is it a robust lens ?
* reliable or problematic as I've read about the 16-50 ?

Any other issues, god, bad or ugly ?
Thanks,
Les

It is sharp.

Color are lovely

Plastic. I take it with me when I go to camping and travel. I am not using it to hit anything, but it is just like every lens that I have and didn't break down.

* reliable or problematic as I've read about the 16-50 ?

It is using the screw autofocus, so won't have SDM problem if it is what you are afraid of. I didn't see mine have any problem. The only "complain" will be the size of the lens, which make me think about getting 15mm Limited :P (LBA again.) But it is a very useful lens.

* as sharp or better than the 16-45 at some extent. the 16-45mm is better at 24mm.

* colors are good

* plastic. same as the 16-45 which quite robust as well.

* reliable.

other issues:

* slight contrast weakness at 24mm wide open. use f8 for best results

* ugly CA. pp correctable

bonus pics :

DA12-24 @ 12mm f4

DA12-24 @ 24mm f5.6

The 12-24 is very sharp, whether it is as sharp as the lenses you've mentioned, I'll leave for people who take pictures of resolution charts. In the real world, it is superb.
Colour rendition is typical Pentax, which is very good.
It seems well enough built, though not on par with the DA* lenses.
Mine has been absolutely reliable.

Anyone have any thoughts/comparison on the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX vs. the Pentax 12-24 f/4?

OR...anyone with the inside scoop on whether Tokina will make an 11-16 with the Pentax mount?

As someone mentioned, CA is the weakest point IMO. However, it can be corrected "in-body" on the K-7 and even the K-x now. The OP does not indicate which body being used. Otherwise, sharp, contrasty and very useful FL.
Oh, one more thing: I'm OK with the size of the lens, but that hood! darn!

Dpreview has one. although there is not Pentax 12-24/4, there is the Tokina 12-24 review which is exactly the same lens as the Pentax. there is also the sigma 10-20/4-5.6 review so that you could compare and read both. also check the review at photozone lens review section under Pentax sub-topic.

no reports that Tokina will make, although Sigma has an upcoming 8-16mm rectilinear UW. might as well consider that.

RAW post processing is the best way in removing unwanted CAs. and yes, that hood is really annoying.

I have been eyeing this lens for ages

Just wondering also if this lens is able to focus as close as my DA14? If not, what is the closest focus distance?

Specs for all pentax lenses can be found here:

Welcome to Bojidar Dimitrov's Pentax K-Mount Page

According to that site, the DA12-24 has a minimum focus distance of 30cm, versu 17cm for the DA14.

Raider if you come to the photo day we are planning you can try mine out, I am bringing my DA12-24 and DA10-17 for people to try out.

New WA user group and Photo day Thread

For OP, I love this lens. I didn't when I was trying to use it handheld indoors... but with good lighting it really shines, although i find I spend 90% of the time using it at 12mm or 24mm, I prefer primes to zooms though. Colour rendition is great, as is sharpness. I don't think you would be unhappy if you bought it.
